Austin Michael Alan Roberts
June 23, 1997 - December 19, 2015
Austin Michael Alan Roberts, the son of Travis and Lori Schomaker Roberts, was born June 23, 1997, in Spencer, Iowa. Austin received his early education in Spencer and was currently a senior at Spencer High School.

Austin was a good kid. Born and raised in Spencer, Iowa, he loved what many boys and young men love - hot rods, sports, hunting, snowmobiling, friends and family. He was always a big and strong kid, affectionately known as Austin 'BeastMode' Roberts, and equally known for his hearty laugh, cheerful personality, and kind heart. Always grateful for what he had in life, he never asked for anything. Whether it was 'helping Dad with things,' racing Mom's car at the airport drags, hanging out at Paco's, riding motorcycles, or working on hot rods with Grandpa and Dad, he was happy.

A natural athlete, Austin excelled at sports throughout his life. In his early years he rode horses, placing as High Point in the USA in three different events with the Appaloosa Horse Club. He even qualified for the world championships and placed third against the adults, and at the age of 13, Austin was the world champion in Keyhole. He was a fixture on the offensive and defensive lines of the Spencer Tigers football team. Austin particularly loved the sport of wrestling, including his coaches, teammates, and wrestling family. He demonstrated what it meant to have heart and determination to work hard and improve as an athlete, resulting in an eighth place finish in his first appearance at the state wrestling meet last year. Wanting to give back to and help others find joy and accomplishment from wrestling, he enjoyed being a role model for younger kids entering the sport by working with them at Iowa Great Lakes Wrestling programs, and motivating and coaching his JV and Varsity teammates.

Austin's kind heart was felt by everyone who knew him. Known for making people smile and laugh, doing anything for anyone in need, and always being in a good mood regardless of what may be bothering him, Austin had a great attitude about life.

Austin passed away on December 19, 2015 at Spencer Hospital at the age of 18. He is preceded in death by his grandmother, Margaret Schomaker; his great-grandparents: Barney and June Roberts, Violet and Milton Hubbard, Mable and Delbert Schomaker and Betty and Pappy Pasierb.

Left to cherish his memory are his parents, Travis and Lori Roberts of Dickens, IA; his two sisters, Melany and Shae; maternal grandfather, Mike Schomaker and friend, Robin Gunn of Spencer, IA; paternal grandparents, Denny and Andi Roberts of Dickens, IA; uncles: JR Schomaker of Spencer, IA, and Shawn Roberts and wife, Kelly of Milford, IA; aunts: Heather Podzimek and husband, Tom of Everly, IA and Cristie Roberts of Paragould, AR; other relatives and many friends.

I didn't know Austin but my grandson did. Austin told him he was a natural when it came to wrestling and encouraged my grandson to go out for wrestling. My grandson transferred to Estherville in November, but is still a Tiger at heart. Austin's passing has hit him hard because he was such an inspiration not just to him but to a lot of the younger students that he worked with and knew..... Austin had such a big impact on so many lives. What a devastating thing to happen to anyone, let alone such a young person. Austin's memory will live on in anyone who knew him. To his parents and sisters, my heart goes out to you at this time and God has taken such a wonderful person to be up in heaven with him. Rejoice his memory and remember that he will be forever in your hearts.
1d it meant a lot to my grandson. The loss of a friend and mentor has been somewhat difficult for him a I am sure it is for anyone who knew or loved Austin, My grandson said Austin was also very close to his twin sisters. He changed school in November but he will always be a Tiger at heart

But I hope in the days to come that your family can band together and with your enending love and God's strength to slowly heal the hurt and agony that encircles you all. Lori and family, we are so deeply sorry for the loss of your son Austin. We met Austin a few years ago when our own son tried wrestling for a season. During every practice, Austin's personality lit up the room. Each and every time Austin was present the tone of practice took on a positive vibe. Over the years, my son has taken notice of yours, and we would see him here and there around town. Our son would always say - 'Hey! There's that wrestler!' Austin was a standout and a positive role model - and there is no doubt that people took notice when he was around. There are no words that will ever make this better. But know that you are thought of and prayed for. As a young girl who also lost her brother at a young age on Christmas, I also pray for your two girls as they navigate their lives. <3 We extend our deepest sympathies to you and your family.

You do not know me, but my heart is breaking for the Robert's family and friends. My daughter is a junior at SHS, and knows Austin. She told me, simply, 'He is a sweetheart.' I think she is still taking this all in and processing what has happened. Your boy touched many lives, adults as well as other kids. My daughter also told me he was a Christian who had no problem discussing the Lord with anybody. My heart aches for you all.
