In Memory of

Nancy Ann Schlichting

Nancy Ann Schlichting, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Haack) Galema, was born on October 2, 1940 in Ocheyedan, Iowa. She attended school at Excelsior School, south of Lake Park, graduating in 1958. Following graduation, she attended Worthington Junior College for 2 years. She then started working at the Dickinson County Extension Office in Spirit Lake.

On October 26, 1963, Nancy married Ken Schlichting. Following their marriage, they lived in Melvin and Nancy was a homemaker and stayed home to raise her two daughters and managing household affairs. In 1980, the couple moved to Storm Lake, where she worked In Buena Vista County Extension Office. In 1987 they moved to Spencer, and Nancy worked at the Clay County Sherriff’s Office. She held the position with respect, and very near to her heart and she enjoyed all the people she had the honor of working with.

Nancy was a feisty force of life. All that surrounded Nancy knew she was fiercely loyal, incredibly welcoming and loved by those around her beyond measure. Her warm personality and inner glow superseded all that she did, and no one escaped her charm. She would like to say, “Farewell and be well.” And probably a few words that are not fit to print. She was feisty until the end.

Nancy’s family would like to thank the staff at St. Luke Lutheran Home for the exceptional care they provided her.

She passed away on Monday, July 13, 2020, at the age of 79. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters: Janet and Karen. Her father made an indelible impression in her life and laid the foundation for the strong family values that she carried with her until the end. Her sisters were among her best friends.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ken of 56 years of Spencer; her daughters: Susan Schlichting of Davenport, IA and her two children: Noah and Brady and Cynthia Schlichting (Brian Carlson) of Minneapolis, MN; several nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

There will be no funeral service. What she would like is that you take time to spend with your family, be safe and stay healthy. If you wish, consider a donation to your favorite charity in Nancy’s name. She was particularly fond of women’s and animal rights.
