Print Obituary

Terry Donald Steffen, second son of Donald Clarence and Lucile May (Olson) Steffen was born on February 23, 1952 in Spencer, Iowa. He was baptized, confirmed, and learned to make homemade ice cream at the Rossie United Church of Christ. Terry attended Greenville-Rossie and Clay Central schools in Rossie, Greenville, and Royal. After graduation, Terry attended Iowa State University in Ames. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Farm Operations, graduating on his birthday in 1974.

While baling hay for Ben and Carol Albers in 1968, Terry met the farmer’s daughter, Marcia Rae. The high school sweethearts were united in marriage at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal on March 16, 1974. By December of that year, the young couple had moved to the farm where they would live, love, and farm together for the next 43 years. The Happy Hog Haven produced corn, soybeans, hay, cattle, and of course, pigs. Terry was a farmer through and through – never “just a farmer” he was proud to be a caretaker of his animals and a steward of the earth.

Terry passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017 after a farm accident. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Steffen and his father-in-law, Benjamin Albers. Cherishing his memory are his wife, Marcia; his children: Katie Marie Steffen of Des Moines, Heidi Rae and Paul Mogush and their sons Benjamin John and Gilbert Donald of Minneapolis, Jessob Terry Steffen and Marra Patton and their family, Ayslyn Marie, Skye Kellyann, and Jackson Jessob of Rossie, and Yannick Perrin and Hassan Sadri and their sons Darius and Keyvan of Rolle, Switzerland; his mother, Lucy Steffen and mother-in-law Carol Albers, both of Spencer; siblings and siblings-in-law; his church family; as well as countless friends and neighbors.

Terry will be remembered for his faith, kindness, ability to make something out of nothing, laughter, and his never-ending love for his wife, children, and grandchildren. Blessed be his memory.

“Marcia and family,
I only found out about Terry's passing a couple days ago when Marcia noticed me on FB. I was deeply affected. Terry was a roommate of mine at Iowa State and I have so many memories of him! Let me mention a few of the things I fondly remember:
He spoke of Marcia often and with love, and I see from Terry's obit that he married you just after graduation from college, which is what I would have expected. Terry and I made each other LAUGH, and I have a visual in my mind of him at age 19 or so laughing HARD!!! Deep belly laughs. We had a LOT of fun together. He made me laugh even when he was unaware of it. For example, another visual I have of him (and I witnessed this one quite often) was in our dorm room late at night. We both began by studying. He was at his desk and I at mine. After a bit I would look over at him and he was OUT with his forehead on the open pages of his book. Eventually, he would wake up, mutter a few words which I cannot here repeat, and go to bed. I'm laughing at this moment writing that memory. And as his obituary says, Terry was born to farm, and PROUD of it! He told me stories of life on the farm, and I knew that he was of the earth. The earth needs more people like Terry. He loved the land, his profession, and especially his family.

And I loved him.

My life is better for having known him. We lost contact for a great many years as our lives took separate paths, but several years ago we reconnected, and I remember happily talking with him by phone. I had always wanted to take a side trip to visit Terry and Marcia when I went back to Clear Lake to visit my own family, but I regret to say that that never happened. I am shedding some tears as I write this, but not tears of agony, rather tears of gratitude that our lives crossed paths.

Rest peacefully, my friend, and know that your true love will one day join you in Heaven after her time on earth has also concluded. Your life mattered to many, including me.

“Marcia and Family
We are so saddened by the loss of Terry. We have never met a man who exhibited the compassion and support that we experienced with Terry. He was always patient and willing to happily answer all of our stupid questions about farm and crops and he provided an invaluable education. There is surely a special place in heaven for him.
We will miss those long discussions about family and life over dinner, as well as his infectious smiles and laugh.
