Richard Henry Riedemann was born at home on the family farm east of Primghar, IA, to Ernest and Mayme (Horstmann) Riedemann on February 5, 1930. He attended rural schools and graduated in 1948 from Primghar High School. He was called into military service in the fall of 1951. He received his basic training at Ft.Knox, KY and then sent to Kitzingen, Germany and served in the 1st Engineers Battalion with the Big Red One Division. While there he attended school to learn shorthand, enabling him to be a court reporter for Court Martials. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1953.
Richard married Leora J. Schoning on August 29, 1954. They were blessed with four daughters: Karla, Karen, Susan and Barbara. He worked at various jobs, retiring from Eaton Corporation in 1993. He enjoyed visits with his children and grandchildren taking them on camping trips to various states. Later he and Leora traveled extensively throughout the U.S. They went on overseas tours that took them to the British Isles, Battle of the Bulge and Around the World Tour (Russia, Germany, Israel, China). Rich thoroughly enjoyed fishing, especially in Canada, Minnesota and South Dakota. Richard was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Barbara; brothers: Vernon, Gaylord and Elwood and their wives.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Leora of Spencer, IA; his three daughters: Karla Freeberg of Mankato, MN, Karen Feddersen (Delmar) of Ashburn, VA and Susan Hammen (Patrick) of Waukee, IA; six grandchildren: Jill and Michele Lyons, Tyler and Jessica Feddersen and Nicholas and Natalie Hammen; one great grandson, Eric Rucker; his twin sister, Delores Richter of Hartley, IA; many nieces and nephews; other family members and friends.
