“It was an honor to be Dan’s friend throughout the days of our youth. Dan had an effortless vocabulary, brilliant mind, quick wit, respectfulness to others and strong character which many will remember fondly. Dan will be deeply missed by so many people he has touched. “Our deep and sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ray. We knew him through his wonderful work on the Forgotten Iowa Facebook page and were such fans of him not only as a historian and scholar, but as a human being. We know that the loss of him will leave a huge void for so many who loved him, and for Iowa, where he was the passionate caretaker of its stories, its legacies, its tragedies and triumphs. We count ourselves very fortunate that our paths crossed. He will never be forgotten.”

“Deepest and sincerest sympathies for your loss. I did not know Ray personally, but through his Forgotten History group, did experience wonderful exchanges with him on a number of topics. I feel that I have lost a very good friend. With total and complete sadness, mixed with admiration and respect for the person that Ray portrayed, I pray to our Father in Heaven to place Ray at His right hand so that he can help guide as all until our day to meet and smile at our histories and the histories of others. God bless.

“I am saddened beyond words. My heartfelt sympathies to the Wetherell family. Dan was one of a kind. He has made a difference in our community and what he did for our library is nothing short of amazing. He had a vision for the library and had quite a following for all his programs, events, speaker series, etc. His personality drew people to the library. We will hold on to all the memories, as they will last forever. RIP my friend. ”

“Words escape me at this time, so for a guy whose amazing intellect was only surpassed by his ability to have a good time and pour a stiff drink, I will share some Hunter S. Thompson, light a fantastic cigar and crack open a fine bottle of wine tonight. Rest well, my friend! Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
