What does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.  This is how Gretchen tried to live.  She was born to Ellis Thayer Morgan and Pearl Margaret Eggers on March 27, 1930 in Persia, Iowa.  Gretchen graduated from Spencer High School in 1948, attended Morningside College, took graduate studies at Northern Iowa and graduated from Buena Vista University.

Gretchen was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church serving as organist for 55 years.  The Spencer Area Concert Association was an important project to bring the best musical talent available to North West Iowa.  Other vital interests in her life were: Clef Club, PTA, Eastern Star and Delta kappa Gamma, and honorary teacher’s organization.  Martha Church Circle was an important service.

Lowell Duane Hagedorn and Gretchen were married on March 3, 1951 in Grace United Methodist Church while it was blizzarding outside.  Twenty-four relatives and friends were able to brave the elements and attend.  There was one tractor and three pickups in the parking lot.  They wanted to get married before Lowell entered the military service.  They had many happy times in Colorado Springs near Camp Carson, Colorado.

John Jay Hagedorn of Chanhassen, MN is their son.  John and his wife, Kathy and granddaughters, Morgan and Shelby were greatly loved by Lowell and Gretchen.

Gretchen started teaching in Old North School.  She took off to be a mother and Cub Scout Den Mother.  Her troops and Gretchen marched in several parades.

Gretchen was a 6th grade teacher at Fairview School for 24 years.  She enjoyed substituting and especially at Sacred Heart School.

In her free hours she enjoyed reading, gardening and golf.  Friends were very important in her lifetime.  Playing bridge and traveling were special joys.  Seeing God’s handiwork in many foreign lands was her thrill with all of the lasting memories.

“Mrs. Hagedoorn was one of my beloved teachers. In sixth grade, she was my homeroom teacher and she would read to our class after lunch. Sometimes a book, a chapter or so a day, and sometimes a poem that we would then discuss. I will never forget when she recited "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer. Because of that, I have become a very proficient tree hugger. Gretchen was an inspiration for living life with purpose and keeping a sense of humor about most everything. And can I just say, she sure had STYLE! ”

“My thoughts are with Gretchen's family, and in particular, my high school classmate, John. I grew up in the Spencer United Methodist Church, and listened to Gretchen master the massive concert organ for many years. Sometimes, when she took rare breaks away for a weekend, I would substitute. To this day, it was an anxiety-producing experience, and perhaps more to my mother (sitting in the front row) than myself. Gretchen represented such a solid figure in the church, which I value to this day. I am so sorry for your loss, John, and just know that your mom is in a great place now- at peace, and living in abundant life. ”

My history with Gretchen goes back to my childhood at Grace United Methodist Church, including my time in the youth choir. She also played at my wedding, and much later, at the funerals of both of my parents, George and Joanne Mallory. We all thought highly of her and enjoyed her gift of music throughout the years. It was a pleasure knowing this lovely woman. My sympathy to John and family. God bless.”

“We are so sorry to read of dear Mrs Hagedorn's passing. Our oldest daughter, Alyssa, had her as her kindergarten teacher, the last year that Mrs. Hagedorn taught prior to her retirement. She was truly an inspiration to all of her students over the years, as well as a committed staff member to the Fairview teachers. Whenever we saw her in public, she always asked about our daughter by name, something to commend her for, given how many lives that she touched over the years. She was a true gem! During this time of sorrow, may you always be aware of God's unfailing love, and feel comfort in the great legacy that she has left with her imprint on her many students over the years. Tom and Mary Galik”

“Please accept my sincere condolences. Mrs. Hagedorn is the teacher I will always remember as a guiding force who impressed upon me the importance of honoring God and country. We unfailingly recited the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each day, participated in the process of choosing and debating presidential candidates, and memorized the poem "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer. "... A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray ... " I am sending my prayers for her soul to find eternal rest.”
