Alma Jean “Jeanie” Berends, the daughter of George and Lillian Voogd Lorenz, was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, where she grew up.  Her family moved to Iowa when she was 15. Jeanie graduated from the Spencer High School in 1955.

Jeanie married Eugen Pooler in July of 1958.  Jeanie worked as a cook at the Spencer Senior Center for 11 years, and then taught Preschool in Everly for 15 years.

Jeanie married Archie Berends on March 9, 1981 in Everly, Iowa.  They lived on Archie’s farm near Everly.  Jeanie was an active past member of the United Methodist Church in Everly, and then a member of the First Congregational Church in Spencer.  In her spare time, Jeanie enjoyed crocheting, reading, playing games on the computer, visiting with people, and she loved holding babies at church.  Most of all, Jeanie loved her family.

On January 11, 2019, Jeanie passed away at Longhouse Residence in Spencer at the age of 82.  She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Archie; her young son, Rodney Pooler; stepson, Dennis Berends; and two sisters: Judy Frerichs and Georgia Mohr.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Cindy Hamrick and her husband, Craig of LeMars, IA, Sandy Hobmeier of Sioux Falls, SD, Lori Beal of Spencer, IA and Bev Joyce of Waite Park, MN; one sister, Sally Jepsen and her husband, Pete of Terril, IA step-son, Steven Berends and his wife, Beth of Everly, IA; stepdaughter-in-law Susan and Jim Adams of Everly, IA; 20 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

“Dear Sandy and family,
We were hoping to see you at the cemetery last Saturday but apparently things changed. ‘Just want to let you know we have very fond memories of Jeannie... from forty years ago to recent years. She was a good friend to Augusta and Arnold...and I enjoyed seeing her years later when she visited Archie at the nursing home. She was a loving and kind mother and grandma and we thank God for her. We pray His comfort and peace surrounds you now and in the times ahead. ”

“On behalf of my family I offer condolences to the family and friends of Mrs. Berends. We were helped to cope with our grief through prayer and expressions of love and encouragement. 2 Cor 1:3,4 says that the Father of "tender mercies" comforts us in our trials and enables us to comfort others. It is our sincere prayer that God will strengthen you and those cherished memories will continue to warm your hearts. ”

“I've been trying to wrap my head around the idea of a world without my cousin Jeanie in it. So far - impossible. Sending sympathy, love, and generous hugs to all of you who knew her and loved her also. She was my first babysitter, my favorite hugger and laugh giver. We had some good chuckles and some quiet hand holding. She was always there for my mom. Jeanie was sweet, kind, loving, and generous. She will be "just around the corner with a twinkle in her eye" tucked quietly in my heart but not forgotten. Peace, this we choose each day.”
