Virginia (Ginny) Ione (Gosch) Brinkley was born on September 3, 1923 in Omaha, NE.  Virginia was called to her heavenly home on January 20, 2019 at the Spencer Hospital. Virginia was the third child born to Henry Peter and Josephine Emma (Greve) Gosch.  At three days of age, Virginia’s mother passed away, so she went to live with her aunt and uncle, John and Anna Wunschel, at Spencer, IA.  She attended Clay County schools and graduated from Spencer High School in 1941.  Virginia was baptized in infancy and was confirmed in March 1937 at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.

Virginia was the first nurse’s aid at the Spencer Hospital in 1941.  From 1942-45.  Virginia worked at Northrup Air Craft in California as ‘Rosie the Riveter’ on P61s before returning to Spencer.  She married Kenneth Lester Brinkley on February 21, 1947 at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.  To this union were born three sons:  Roger, Gary and Kent.  Kenneth and Virginia spent their married life farming in the Langdon and Spencer areas.  Virginia was a homemaker most of her life as well as teaching Sunday School and being a member of the Altar Guild at First English Lutheran Church.  She also was a volunteer for the Spencer Hospital Auxiliary.

Virginia was an excellent cook and freely shared her recipes when they were requested.  She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.  Her love of her Lord was evident in her life to the very end.  She was a great person for making an individual feel at home and welcome wherever she met them.

Upon retiring from farming in 1984, Virginia and Kenneth moved into Spencer.  They later lived in the Sunset Apartments before moving into Riverview Terrace Assisted Living.  Virginia transferred to St. Luke Lutheran Home in October 2014.

Living family members include sons Roger (Ann) of Lynden, WA and Gary (Dorothy) of Hampton, IA; 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Virginia is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth in 2015; her parents and aunt and uncle who raised her; son Kent; granddaughter Kimberly; sister Geneva Hansen; and brother, Lloyd Gosch.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 10, 2019 at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.

“We were so sorry to learn of Virginia's passing. She and Kenneth were so warm and welcoming when we joined FELC with the ground breaking for the new facility. They were always there to greet us between services until their health failed and they were no longer able to attend regularly. They were both a shining example of witnessing their faith to others around them. During this time of sorrow, may you always be aware of God's abiding love. May many wonderful memories be your source of comfort. Tom and Mary Galik”

“I spent three months sharing the dining table with Ginny at St. Lukes. She was so helpful to all the people around her. The thing I most enjoyed about her was that little twinkle she got in her eyes when she was about ready to say something cute in her own quiet way. I considered her a friend even if it was only for a short period of time .”
