Winifred Louise Cooper Schoenewe was born in Spencer, Iowa to Lynn and Loretta Harris Cooper on January 2, 1933.

Winnie attended public schools in Everly and Spencer and graduated from Everly High School in 1950.  She married Ron Schoenewe in 1952 and they made their home in Everly where he managed Topsoil Schoenewe, a fertilizer and ag lime business.  They raised and educated four children in Everly:  Lee, Renette, Marc, and Greg.

Winnie was known for her many kind acts and her love of people.  She took care of the sick and sat by many death beds.  The week before she died she helped deliver 300 May baskets she had made to nursing home residents.  She had an optimistic view of life and was willing to share gifts of her food, her time, and her compassion.

Her family was musical and she enjoyed sharing her music.  She spent many years in the Everly Kitchen Band and was in the Bell Choir at the First Christian Church.  The day of her death she was scheduled to play bells with her church choir at a nursing home.  Winnie Schoenewe passed away suddenly at her home on May 10, 2019.

Winnie was preceded in death by her parents Lynn and Loretta Cooper, her in-laws Dorothy Schoenewe Thorne and A.M. Schoenewe,  her husband Ron Schoenewe, her daughter Renette Schoenewe House, and her brothers Leo, Roger, Gerald, Frank, and Robert Cooper,  and her sister Shirley Lauck.

Winnie is survived by her sister Cynthia Baxter of Primghar, Iowa; her son Lee (Nancy) Schoenewe of Spencer, Iowa; her son Marc (Patty) of Olathe, Kansas; her son Greg (Beth) of Ackworth, Iowa; her grandson Eric (Julie) House of Irving, Texas; her grandson Tucker Schoenewe (Anne) of Norwalk, Iowa; her granddaughter Amanda Schoenewe of Olathe, Kansas; and great-grandsons Jameson and Hayden House.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam may be made to First Christian Church in Spencer, Iowa, or the Oneota Conservation Foundation in Spencer, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held 1:00 P.M., Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at the First Christian Church in Spencer, Iowa.

“Winnie was an anchor and a rock. She dealt with life’s adversities, no matter how big or small, with grace, calmness, and composure. She slipped away from us, quietly, with no fanfare or even a warning or hint of goodbye. Sail on, Winnie. They are waiting for you on the other shore. ”

“Dear Lee & Nancy, Marc & Patti, Greg & Beth & family!
My heart is heavey with the loss of Winnie! I had the privilege of knowing her because of my friendship with Renette!
I had the opportunity to spend time with your family at Everly & the cabin at Okoboji! Your parents were beautiful hosts! Ron made thee best margarita & Winnie always had a refrigerator full of great food that she had in case someone stopped! She was a great cook & so happy to share with all!!
She was truly a classy, compassion & considerate lady! She endured hardship & sorrow with true courage and humility!!
Winnie used the word “Awesome” with such sincerity to describe experiences that she had with all of you & especially her grands & great grands!! My life was enriched by knowing her & all of you! I thank you for sharing your beautiful Winnie with all of us! I share your loss but celebrate her beautiful spirit!!

“Oh, Winnie...……...I still have a tough time believing I won't see your infectious smile and fun loving personality at work anymore. It has always been a joy when you come to church to visit or make copies or ask me what to do with your computer now...……..was fun to see what you would come up with next for the nursing home residents who loved seeing you. I am so glad we got to know each other a little bit...……….you were always there with a hug when needed and made everyone smile when they didn't really feel like smiling. Fly high with angels, dear lady...…...….you sure deserve it. See you again someday, but until then, you will be missed. ”

“Dear Family of Winnie!
What a shock to hear of Winnie passing away.
I never was in church but what I did not get a hug from her.
To think she not only delivered those May baskets.
She made them Every year for a lot of years.
Also treats for a lot of other holidays to the nursing homes.
I worked at Longhouse/ Northshire and for many many years
Winnie and her kitchen band came to play several times..
Roger will miss her peanut brittle at Christmas time..
She will be missed by not only her family but by her many friends.
RIP dear Winnie .. we all love you.

“To Winnies family,
So sorry to hear this great woman passed! She was a delight and I got to know her when we put on "Small Small Christmas" in one of the buildings of the East side of main street in Everly. Winne, Shelia and Judy had the artistic talent and Carol and I helped and we all put hours and hours of time into it for several years!!! We all had such fun and it was really neat. May God wrap his arms around you all and give you peace! ”
