Roger Henry Kruse, the son of Alvin and Clara (Berg) Kruse was born August 11, 1932, in rural Peterson, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in the Royal area where he attended school and graduated from Royal High School in 1951. He attended Dana College in Blair, NE for two years. In 1953, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Army from July 1953 until his Honorable Discharge in June of 1955.
Roger married Betty Petersen on November 29, 1953, at the Lutheran Church in Underwood, Iowa. Roger was born, raised and lived his entire life at the home farm near Royal except for his years in college and the military. The home place that he farmed his whole adult life has been in the family for 157 years. Roger was an active member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal, Iowa, where he was a Sunday school teacher and served on the church council. He served on the Clay County Food for Life board and was an active member of the Royal community serving on the Willow Creek Cemetery Board, Royal Telephone Board for 18 years, Clay Township Clerk since 1987, was an active member of the American Legion, treasurer for the Royal/Clay/Lincoln Fire Dept., and member of Northwest Iowa Classic Tractors and Gideons International.
Roger passed away at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on Friday, August 9, 2019, at the age of 86. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Joyce Ann Sabel and his sister, Janice Mussack.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty of Peterson, IA; one son, Keith and Joyce Kruse of Everly, IA; one daughter, Brenda and Steve Golay of Perry, IA; son-in-law, Tom Sabel of DesMoines, IA; three grandchildren: Javan and Danielle Kruse and their children, Ali, Nate and Ryan of Hartley, IA; Alecia and Casey Tolzin and son, Luke of Alta, IA; Eric and Carol Golay of Tucson, AZ.; step-grandson, Brian and Jaime Sabel of Memphis, TN; step-granddaughter, Jennifer Burkett and her son, Jon of Dallas Center, IA; sister, MaryAnn (John) Munson of Elkton, MN; brother-in-law, Art Mussack of Decatur, NE.; other relatives and many friends.In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Roger's name.
