Steven John Fox, son of Stanley and Darlene (Reilly) Fox, was born on the 11th of February in 1968 in Sheldon, IA. His childhood years were spent as a Sheldon Orab where he excelled in swimming, track and field, wrestling and football. He went on to play college football and threw the shot put and discus for track. He met his future wife, Missy at Morningside College in 1988 and later married in 1992.

After moving to Spencer in 1990 his love for volunteering flourished. He joined the Jaycees and became very active within the organization. Maintaining the presidential position for two consecutive years and becoming the first ever to receive the Tony Proehl Outstanding Spencer Jaycee Award twice. He loved working the haunted house and flipping burgers at the Jaycee’s fair stand. In 2010, Steve was inducted into the Jaycees Hall of Fame lifetime awards. His years of involvement with the Jaycees, he bonded with many and created life long friends.

One of Steve’s greatest accomplishments was his idea for Miracle on 4th Street SE playground. His idea to create a playground came after finding out he was going to be a father for the first time. He wanted to create a playground for his children along with others from the community to enjoy for generations to come. Steve worked on fundraising, planning, and opening the playground that is now known as East Leach Park in which Governor Branstad attended. The work on East Leach Park stemmed the idea for building three other parks in town; Sunset, Northschool, and Waterway. He inspired people to help construct all three of these parks in one day. For these amazing accomplishments, he earned the Jack Wedel Volunteer of the year in 1998.

Steve was involved in the community at many levels. He was one of the founding members of Positively Spencer (Young Professionals). He was on the Spencer Municipal Golf Course board and oversaw the building of the current clubhouse. Being a Shriner and Mason, he was able to continue working with the kids of the community. He participated in several local parades driving the Shriner’s six-wheelers and enjoyed taking 5th graders to the Shrine Circus in Sioux City. One of his last volunteering involvements was becoming a Spencer Tailtwister where he helped raise money for a large amount of the high school athletics wants and needs, such as the new weight room.

Steve loved his family more than anything. He enjoyed all of Cassidy and Cooper’s activities,   almost never missing an event. Cooking for his family and grilling on the back deck was a nightly routine that he loved. Fox Family fourth of July’s were full of fun, fireworks and friends. He worked for Insurance Associates for nearly 25 years, where he continued making many acquaintances with the Spencer Community.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Darlene Fox and nephew Johnathon Fox.

Left to celebrate his life are his wife Missy of Spencer, IA, children Cassidy (Fox) Christy and husband Andrew of Midway Park, NC and Cooper Fox of Spencer, IA, brother Darrell Fox and wife Judy of Spencer, IA and children Christopher and Ben Fox, sister Ann (Fox) Hoch and husband Jim of Ainsworth, NE nephew Reilly Hoch, wife Abby and daughter Jaeda, and niece Haley Hoch. “I am still in shock and disbelieve that Steve is gone. You two made our move to Spencer such an enjoyable and relaxing experience as Steve introduce us to the town that he loved. The term..."my fuse is lit, lets go" will always remind me of Steve as we ready ourselves for night out after the Jaycees meeting or when we close the Jaycee stand down at the fair. I tracking satellites off your deck late at night was something new coming from Mpls and now as we look up at the heavens late at night, we will not only see the satellites whipping by...but Steve gracious soul, big heart looking down as he watches over you, your family and the rest of us. ”
