Klaas Dick Groen, the son of Benhard and Jennie (Nagel) Groen was born on February 26, 1936, near Rock Rapids, IA. He received his early education attending country school in Lyon County. After school, he worked for many area farmers.

Klaas married Betty Klein on March 21, 1958, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Shortly after they moved to Spencer, where he started their own company in 1965 and built many homes in the Spencer and Iowa Lakes Area. He employed many young men over the years and enjoyed teaching them the construction trade. He enjoyed playing ball, whether he was pitching or coaching little league. As he slowed down in life, traveling became their pastime and they spent 20 years in Arizona, where golfing became his hobby. In recent years he lived at the Highlands, he enjoyed playing pool with his friends. He was a member of Hope Reformed Church. His church and faith were always important to him. He served on Consistory, building committees, taught Sunday school and volunteered on mission work projects. His mission work took him to Haiti, Nicaragua and other areas of the United States. His family was very important to him and loved attending sports and school activities for their children and grandchildren.

Klaas passed away on September 16, 2019, at the St. Luke Lutheran Nursing Home in Spencer after a 6 week stay. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Burdell Groen: one sister, Gertie Gransow and two brothers-in-law, Donald Rust and Harold Gransow. He is survived by sisters, Aleida Rust and Doris Boleman and brother, Eugene Groen and wife, Renae.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty of Spencer, IA; his four children: Randy Groen and his fiancé, Shuan and her children: Precious and Leah, Jeff Groen and his wife, LeeAnn, Tami Kuiper and her husband, Lyle and Brett Groen;  nine grandchildren: Brandon Groen, Brady Groen, Bryson Groen, Benjamin Groen, Amber Groen Kaneshige, Emery Groen, Trevor Kuiper, Justin Kuiper and Joseph Kuiper; his two step grandchildren: Patrick Fuchs and Timothy Fuchs and his wife, Melanie; his three step great grandchildren: Kiley, Mckenna and Addisyn Fuchs; his seven great grandchildren: Leilani Kaneshige, Koda Kaneshige, Asher Kuiper, Cohen Kuiper, Jack Kuiper, Jude Kuiper and Leon Groen; other relatives and friends.

“Mel spoke well about Klaas and his building skills. My father was a builder/carpenter also, and I always think how admirable it is to build a well constructed and safe house for people to raise their families. I am glad Klaas influence exists in other builders in Spencer who learned from him.”

“Betty and family,
I am sorry for your loss. Klaas had a big impact on my life. I enjoyed all the time he gave me as a boy and young man. He was one of the Christian male roll models that made all the difference in my life. I know I was one of many many people his life touched but I am very thankful that Brett and your family shared him with me over the years especially as a young teen when I needed it the most. His life was a great example to me. May the Holy Spirit comfort you all until you see him again. Prayers Rod Smock”

“Betty and family. We are saddened by the loss of Klass and sadder for Spencer to know his construction talents are now gone. I worked with and around Klass dating back to early 60's. So fun to be around the job with as he was mentor to me. Softball, volleyball and finally golf were also fun times to name a few of good sporting activities he participated in. I truly will miss him.

“Betty and Family,
My sincere sympathy to you. Klaas was a very kind, gentle man, who left a legacy behind, both with his building skills and his contributions to the City of Spencer and Hope Reformed Church. My mom and dad, Harold and Viola Roskens, just loved Klaas and he was always there for them with a helping hand.
Cherish the memories.

“To the Family of Klaas~ Your husband and father was one of the kindest men I knew while living in Spencer. His smile was as genuine as his heart. He was my "go to" guy for learning the ways of the YMCA Nutty Bar stands and had the patience of a saint. I was so sorry to hear of his passing. May the memory of his soft giggle and warm smile, fill the void he has left. ”
