Jay Dean Prange, the son of Gerrit and Esther (Vander Schaaf) Prange, was born on June 15, 1945 in Nebraska.  He attended school in Sheldon and Spencer, graduating from Spencer High School in 1963.  As a child, Jay spent summers with Dick and Marie Minen working on the farm in Firth, NE.  Upon graduating high school, he joined the Army as a mechanic.  He was honorably discharged in 1966.

Jay met Carolyn Westphal in Spencer where they were married on February 18, 1967 at Hope Reformed Church.  They lived in Spencer all their married life except for about 10 years when they lived in the Norwalk, CA area.  Jay was a truckdriver.  He drove for Artesia Ice plant in California.  When they returned to Iowa, he drove for the elevator and Hy-line until he retired.  Jay enjoyed camping with his wife, working with his hands and most importantly, spending time with his family.

“My first memory of Jay was when our fifth grade teacher partnered us together to dance in the Easter Parade program. So many years ago! We both survived and eventually graduated in the same class. Since my husband and I returned to the Spencer area a few years ago we became "re-acquainted" with Jay and have enjoyed his company over many Friday night dinners. Many friends will miss his quiet ways, his stories, and especially his smiles. Please accept our sincere and heartfelt sympathy.”
