Larry was born on August 16th 1951 in Spencer, Iowa to Duane and Norma (Nelsen) Dotson. He spent his childhood in Spencer, IA with his three younger siblings, Rod, Sharon, and Janet. Larry graduated from the Spencer High School in 1969.
On July 6, 1974, Larry married Joan Uhe and to this union 2 children were born, Tony and Laura, who were both very dear to him. Larry worked in various industries in his life, but the majority of his career was in car sales and management, where he quickly realized his knack for sales. Larry was hands down a people person and car sales gave him the perfect opportunity to engage with people and share his passion of cars. Later in life, Larry was remarried to his childhood sweetheart, Danice Mingo on Thanksgiving Day 2001, whom he loved immensely and whole heartedly.
Larry had many hobbies including listening to the Beatles, playing his guitar, hunting/fishing, telling jokes, and writing poetry, but above all he LOVED sprint cars and shooting billiards. Larry was an exceptional billiards player. He participated in pool league and many tournaments, where he often placed first or second place. It wasn’t until his health became poor that he had to give up this passion. Most importantly, Larry was an absolute avid sprint car fan. There was not a fact or statistic that Larry did not know when it came to sprint cars. Over an approximate 40 year time span, Larry did not miss many Knoxville National races; He had the same seats in the exact same section every year. This year, sadly Larry was not able to attend the Nationals, but instead watched them on his big screen with many family and friends. Sprint cars gave Larry an opportunity to bond with his brother, Rod and his son, Tony. On Saturday, October 5, 2019, Larry Duane Dotson, loving husband, father, son, and friend of many, passed away in his home after a long health battle at the age of 68.
Larry was preceded in death by his beloved son Tony Dotson, his father Duane Dotson, his sister Sharon (Dotson) Voss, and several other family members. He is survived by his wife, Danice (Mingo) Dotson, his mother Norma Dotson, his daughter Laura (Ben) Armstrong, his grandchildren Morgan and Brenan Armstrong, his step-children, Chad (Krissy) Tolle, Hope (Steve) Lopez, Anthony Trimboli, step grandchildren Megan, Christopher, Chelsy, Cooper, Braxton, and Audrey, his brother Rod Dotson, sister Janet (Dotson) Friesen, brother-in-law Craig Voss, several cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and many close friends.
Larry will always be remembered by his quick wit and humor, his compassionate and romantic heart, his outgoing personality, his ability to engage anyone in a conversation, and his overall vast knowledge of many things. He will be severely missed and his memories will be cherished by those who had the privilege to call him family and a friend.
