Marion Howard Posthumus, the son of Gerrit and Bena (Holtrop) Posthumus, was born on May 1, 1932, in Sanborn, Iowa. He received his early education attending schools in Sanborn and Sheldon, graduating from Sheldon High School in 1949. After graduation he entered into the military on May 16, 1951, serving in the U.S. Navy as a Seaman Recruit. He was honorably discharged on June 19, 1951.

On August 9, 1951, Marion married Joyce Elaine Jasper at the First Reformed Church in Hospers, IA. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Sioux City, IA. While in Sioux City, he worked for Wonder Bread, then began painting signs, and continued for Avery Brothers Sign Co. In 1961, they moved to Spencer, where he established his own sign business, Spencer Signs. Marion and Joyce’s second sign business, M&J Redwood Signs, included 28 years at the Clay County Fair and 7 summers at Adventureland Park in Altoona, IA. He retired after almost 55 years of making signs. Marion was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and a past member of the Hope Reformed Church in Spencer. He was active in both, most notably as a singer. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Daybreakers, also serving as a President for one year. He was instrumental in raising money to build the Sunshine Center in Spencer and was a member of the American Legion – Glen Pedersen Post #1.

Marion moved to the Hillside Terrace Assisted Living in 2011. In 2012 he moved to Illinois to live with his son for two years, after which he lived at the Merkle-Knipprath Nursing Home for another two years. During his last three years Marion lived at The Loft Rehab and Nursing Home in Normal, Illinois, near his daughter. He passed away there on October 20, 2019 at the age of 87.

Marion was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joyce, in 2009; his daughter, Lorraine Joyce Posthumus; his granddaughter, Elise Posthumus; and his sisters, Edna Posthumus and Betty Kleinhesselink.

“Jerrie, I am so very sorry to learn of your dad's passing. It seems that no matter how old or how sick our parents may become, it is still hard to say goodbye. I hope that with time, memories of your time spent together will serve as a source of great comfort.”

“I had the privilege of living next to Marion and Joyce for a short while, in Spencer. Both were wonderful neighbors and I enjoyed talking to them across the yard. When Joyce passed away, we fried some fresh caught perch for him and he was grinning from ear to ear. He said he loved fish and didn't get to eat it very often. My family and I moved away from the Spencer area for about 7 years and eventually moved back. I drove through the old neighborhood and wondered where Marion had went and never knew until now. Our thoughts and prayers go out to family and I'm sorry for your loss.”

“My father and I were in a coffee group with Marian and Joyce that met every morning for many years at the Sister's cafe. We shared a lot of family stories and a lot of laughs during that time. Most of the cast of characters in the group are gone now, and I miss them all. I always enjoyed Marian's colorful wit and his endless cache of stories - especially the Oly and Lena jokes. And Joyce? She was just sweet, and always at his side. I am so sorry that I couldn't get to the funeral, I would have liked to pay my respects. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all. ”

“I have such fond memories of Marion, although as I type that word, it seems a bit foreign, as he will always be “Mern” to me. For my first birthday, he made a stool for me that all this time later, my own children used in their early years. I loved Mern and Joyce very much and am blessed that they were part of my childhood. My sympathies to you. ”

“Jerrie & Linda (& families) ~ sending my sympathies for the passing of your father. As best as I can remember, your parents gave me my first "paying" job of house sitting & watering Joyce's house plants whenever they were away from Spencer. I was always nervous one of her beautiful plants would not make it through their vacations. I loved sitting at their kitchen table with a special treat, laughter and a few jokes from Marion. He was one of a kind. May your memories help you through this difficult time.”

“I am very sorry to hear of Marion's . I worked at the Post Office in Spencer for several years, and saw Marion quite often. I could always tell when he had a new joke or "words of wisdom" that he was going to share with me by the look in his eyes and the smile on his face when he walked in. I always looked forward to seeing him.
RIP Marion....and thank you for being you!”
