Donald Eugene Cowell was born January 17, 1938 to Harley and Thelma (Powell) Cowell in Volney, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed into the Methodist faith. He graduated from Waukon High School in 1957.

Donald was united in marriage to Patricia Gass on January 10, 1958 in Decorah, Iowa. To this union, two children were born: Doyle Mark and Michael Drew.

Don worked at Hygrade Food Processing in Postville, IA until the plant closed. He also worked as a mechanic doing small engine repair, as well as serving as town policeman and school bus driver in Clermont. He also served as a Boy Scout Master for a time.

He moved to Spencer, Iowa in 1987 and worked at several jobs doing maintenance and repair; including BSI in Hartley Iowa, Witco, Great Lakes Aviation and Smith Brothers RV.

Don was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge No.160 in Clermont, Iowa. He also was a member of the Royal Arch Masons and the El Kahir Shriners for a time until taking a demit in 1986.

Don enjoyed working on small engines and welding or just working in his shop until failing health and poor eyesight limited what he was able to do.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; his sons: Doyle (Rhonda) and Michael (Judy); grandchildren, Jamey, Blythe, Chandra, Jennifer, Nate, Kristen, Marcus, Carter Cowell, Brielle, Erin, and Tristan Wernimont; as well as six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
