Elaine Florence Crew, the daughter of Raymond Jerry “Ray” Root and Florence Genevieve Olson, was born near Ruthven, Iowa on September 20, 1939. The family also lived for a couple of years in Minnesota and Oregon. They settled in the Los Angeles area in 1952, where Elaine graduated from Whittier High School in 1957.
When the family came back to Iowa to visit relatives and friends, Elaine agreed to go on a blind date with Roger Crew, set up by her cousin Vernon Olson. The rest is history! Roger proposed to her on Thunder Bridge in Spencer. While they were separated between Iowa and California, Roger and Elaine wrote to each other daily, for a year and a half. The treasured hundreds of letters are still together in a box, wrapped in pink and blue ribbons. They were married on November 30th, 1958 in Whittier, California. Roger and Elaine moved to the Gillette Grove area and farmed before moving to Spencer in 1962. (She tells a story of an injured chicken she had to shoot on the farm)!
Roger and Elaine co-owned the Town and Country Drive-In in Spencer for 10 years, and raised their 3 children. Elaine later worked at Economy Insurance and Eaton Corporation, and also worked as a CNA for 10 years at Spencer Hospital.
Elaine loved Jesus, and loved to share of His love with others. She and Roger were very involved with the building of Foundations Church, and even had a part in choosing the original name of DaySpring! She loved reading, traveling to see all of her 6 grandchildren, and treasured her many friends.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Valerie (Bill) Tulip of Spencer, IA, Kellie Burns of Spencer, IA and Steven (Jennifer) Crew of Lawton, IA; 6 grandchildren, Alex (Amy) Tulip of Minneapolis, MN, Tech Sergeant Ben (Crystal) Tulip of Ramstein AFB in Germany, and Leslie Tulip (Tim) Falkenberg of Salzburg, Austria, grandchildren Harry, Jack and Olivia Crew of Lawton, IA and great grandson Daniel Tulip of Minneapolis, MN; 2 brothers, Roger and Harlan Root of Arizona and many other relatives and friends.
