He attended rural schools through 8th grade and quit school in his freshman year to help out on the family farm when his father became ill.  He enlisted in the Army on August 11, 1955 and served in Korea until being honorably discharged on May 24th 1957.

On returning home, he married Patricia Letscher of Pocahontas, IA on June 17th, 1957 in Pocahontas.  They lived several different places in the first 12 years of their marriage with Niles working for several different farmers as a farmhand.  In August of 1969, they moved to Spencer, Iowa and Niles worked at several jobs including Witco, Iowa Veneer Plant, Van Ladder and National Spencer for 14 years before retiring on January 24th, 2002.  He joined First Christian Church in August of 1973 and served as Sunday school secretary for 20 years.  He also served as Deacon over the years.  Niles loved working outdoors, raising his vegetable gardens and planting and tending his beautiful flowers every summer.  He also enjoyed fishing and pitching horseshoes with his brother.  He will be sadly missed by all who loved him.
