Laurie Beth Peters, of Spencer, Iowa, passed away in a motor vehicle accident on Saturday March 7th, 2020 at the age of 59. Laurie was the daughter of Dorothy and Arnold Peters of Sutherland, Iowa. She attended school in Sutherland, graduating from Sutherland High School in 1980.

Laurie went on to be a certified nurse assistant and then a medication aide, working at Millie’s Rest Home in Sutherland for several years. Laurie later moved to Spencer and worked at Sunshine, and Truck Haven until getting her last job at Walmart in 2002.  She started as a greeter then moved to apparel which she  enjoyed. She loved meeting people with a friendly smile and calling them by name.  Laurie never let a person she knew get past her without a big smile, hello and maybe even a hug.  She moved into Golfview Condominiums in 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed living there, making friends with the other residents. She would often tell her family how thankful she was for her condominium.  Laurie had an affinity for turquoise jewelry and would often be seen with a ring on every finger, bracelet on each wrist and a lovely turquoise necklace and earrings to match. When she wasn’t working at Walmart, Laurie could be found driving her scooter all around Spencer, shopping, or relaxing at her home listening to country music on her record player. She loved spending time with her family, especially over the holidays, staying up all night making her famous cherry cheesecake and peanut brittle. Laurie loved life and will forever be remembered by her joyful personality, her smile, laugh and good nature.

Laurie is survived by her four nieces and nephews: Tony Peters of Primghar, IA: Tammy Muilenburg and her husband, Larry of Sutherland; Tracy Peters and his wife, Pam of Hutchinson, KS and Tonya Oolman and her husband, Aaron of Sutherland, IA; sister in law, Liz Peters of Sutherland, IA, nine great nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Laurie is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Bill Peters, and great niece Desiree Crist.

“To Laurie’s Family,
Laurie was a school classmate and Sunday School friend of mine growing up. She was always quiet and thoughtful. I enjoyed getting her to crack a smile! It’s been years since I have seen her, but please know she was a special young lady in school and Sunday School! Good memories! Blessings to all the family from NC.

“I’m still in shock. Cannot find the words. Being so many miles away I once again feel disconnected from family. I remember Laurie as a toddler and being at my wedding. Her visit to Savannah in 84. I do remember her tenderness, her smile and beautiful crystal blue eyes. I loved the Peters family. May the Lord bring comfort and peace to each that grieve. ”

“Penny, my story is much like yours even though I am about five years older. You did a nice job of writing your message.
I want to thank all of you who have left messages. They have given me much joy and comfort. Several of you have given us a glimpse into Laurie's daily life. She seemed happy, and I'm very glad of that.
Her service today and the fellowship before and after were comforting.

“Laurie is my cousin. Born 11 months apart, it was natural that we should spend a lot of time together as children. Many times, at the end of a visit to Arnie and Dorothy's, I would try to sneak her home with us. It didn't work but a couple of times she was allowed to come to our place for a visit. She was probably my very first friend. Sadly, as we grew up, we grew apart. We got further apart after I moved out of state, first to Texas and then to New Mexico. The last time I saw her was at my mother's funeral in 2009. I had heard from my Mom that she was living and working in Spencer and that she was happy. I couldn't wish for more for Laurie. She was often in my thoughts and I have such wonderful memories of us as children. I am sorry I can't be there with the family at this sad time. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. ”

“Dear Peters Family,
So shocked to hear of Laurie's passing. I have fond memories as a kid sharing a school bus seat with Laurie on our ride home at the end of a day. As many of you mentioned there was always a hug, hello and a smile as she greeted you in Walmart. I know I will find myself when I go to Walmart looking for that smile and hug for some time to come. So sorry for your loss. Peggy Schimmer
The Peter's family were such kind neighbors to the Schimmers. ”

We were neighbors at condo and her warm and genuine smile and personality will be greatly missed around here. She enjoyed seeing my little dog, Jasmine, and greeted her as well whenever spotted inside or out.

“This breaks my heart.. I never personally knew her, and I don’t think she personally knew me... but recall waiting on her a few times at American classic cafe, and seeing her around town everywhere, especially on her scooter, which always put a smile on your face. You could tell just by looking at her how much she enjoyed riding that thing. Especially on a beautiful day! She was so proud of it as well. RIP. Keeping riding up there ❤️”
