James (Jim) John Horst, son of Charles and Geneva Horst, was born on May 9, 1938 in Nobles County, MN.  In his early years, he received his schooling in Sanborn, IA.  After graduating high school, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy in September 1955.  He spent his time aboard the USS Tallahatchie LST 1154 in the Mediterranean.  He was proud to serve his country as a Boatswain Mate.  Upon his Honorable Discharge, he met the love of his life Marjorie Bjorklund.  They were united in marriage on June 6, 1970 in Sioux Rapids, IA.  From this union one son was born, James Horst Jr.
Most of his life he worked at H & S Roofing as a foreman and took great pride in his work.  Jim was a hardworking man who loved his family deeply and cherished the time he spent with them.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and attending all of his grandchildren and great grandchildren’s activities.  He especially enjoyed his time every morning with his crew at Sisters Mainstreet Café where he could spend time having a cup of coffee, solving the world’s problems, and teasing his buddies.  He was a loyal member of Foundation Church in Spencer and he valued his faith.
Jim passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at the age of 81 at Longhouse Residence in Spencer.  He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Catherine Stallman; his son Johnny Kress.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years; sister Mary Jungers of Hawarden, IA; sister Margaret Pry of Hawarden, IA; sister Norene (Scott) Petrich of Colorado; daughter Deborah Helmke of Spencer, IA, son Kelly Kress of Ruthven, IA; son James Horst Jr. (Lisa) of Spencer, IA; 10 grandchildren Nicholas (Katie) Chapman of Spencer, IA; Jennifer (Tim) Von Ehwegen of Spencer, IA; Jamie (Josh) Bousquet of Sioux City, IA; Ty Helmke of Ruthven, IA; Sean Kress of Sioux City, IA; Jeramy Kress of Sioux City, IA; Zachary Jackson of Sioux City, IA; Drew Horst of Spencer, IA; Abigail Horst of Spencer, IA; Lauren Horst of Spencer, IA; 7 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

“Well it wasn't all that long ago when Jim crashed my breakfast at Sisters Café. He sat right down and was giving me a hard time for everything, including my job and my hunting abilities. We've known each other for a lot of years and he was quick to point out how I harassed him, for many years, even though I didn't recall them all. Jim was always fun to visit with, especially when fall rolled around. To the family, my condolences and sorry to hear of Jim's passing. ”

“I'm so sorry for your loss. Some of my earliest memories are of Jim teasing me at church. He would pretend to guard the door to the sanctuary, and my friends, and I would try to sneak past him without him seeing. It would always end with he and I exchanging banter. Every time I picture him, I can see his playful grin and his eyes twinkling with mischief. I will miss seeing him the next time I visit Foundation Church. However, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if when my time comes, he's standing at the gates with Peter, pretending not to let me in. Your family is in my prayers as you walk through this difficult time. ”
