Joan Cynthia Schumann, the daughter of Donald and Ruby (Brinkley) Fitzloff, was born February 18, 1940 in Spencer, Iowa. She was raised in Spencer, where she received her education, graduating from Spencer High School in 1958. She continued her education at a business school in Omaha before returning to work in Spencer.
Joan married Dwight Schumann on June 2, 1961, in Spencer where they lived and raised their children. Joan enjoyed gardening, decorating, and crafting. She spent many years designing and painting holiday-themed decorations that many cherished as gifts and collectables. She loved her grandchildren deeply and found great joy in spending time at their activities and sporting events. She and Dwight were active members at Trinity Lutheran Church since 1968.
Joan was a gracious and welcoming host—always willing to add another seat to the table. She was a kind and modest person that shied away from the camera, but she had an infectious smile and laugh. Her family will miss all the laughter around the table during holiday and birthday gatherings.
Joan passed away on Sunday, April 5, at home in the presence of her loving family. She was diagnosed with cancer in March. Facing her foe with grace, courage, and dignity, she spent the last four weeks battling this unforgiving disease. The family wishes to thank Spencer Hospital Hospice Care Facility for their caring professionalism and comforting compassion as well as the team at Abben Cancer Center.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dwight; her grandson, Kipp Kinsley; and a brother, Frank Fitzloff in infancy.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Shelly (Jon) Kinsley of Yankton, SD, Tim (Victoria) Schumann of Arden Hills, MN, and Deb (Chris) Garnatz of Spencer; Six grandchildren: Anne (Brad) Bartunek, Greta Schumann, Grant Schumann, Emma Garnatz, Gage Garnatz, and Griffin Garnatz; Two sisters: Bonnie Brown of Valley City, ND, Donna (Ron) Arndt of Sioux Falls, SD, One brother: Robert (Kathy) Fitzloff of Spencer; and other relatives and many dear friends.
Due to state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial service at this time.  A public memorial will be held at a later date.

The family requests no flowers.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established by the family.
