Print Obituary

Richard “Dick” Donald Hallett Sr., son of Winnifred Hallett and Lillie (McShane) Hallett was born, April 13, 1925 in Artesian, South Dakota where he spent his early years. Later he moved to Sioux City with his mother, where he graduated from Central High School.

Richard was drafted into the service and was to leave for deployment immediately, but chose to enlist in the Army Air Corp., to allow him to graduate with his class that June.  Although not talking about it until later years, he was very proud of his service in WWII.  He flew in a B26 Marauder as a radio gunner and fought in 33 missions over Germany.

Richard married Margie Mae Nothem on January 29, 1947 at the Cathedral in Sioux City.  He attended college through the GI Bill.  After receiving his education, he and Margie moved to her hometown of Remsen Iowa and opened “Dick’s Café”.  They both worked and resided in the café while building their first home, later starting an insurance business.  They remained in Remsen until 1960 when Richard moved his family and business to Spencer.

He had many accomplishments during his lifetime. With Margie at his side, he sold insurance and real estate for over 50 years, he built several affordable housing properties in several towns around Iowa, developed many acres of land throughout Spencer building homes too numerous to count, building his last spec home at age 90.

Over the years he enjoyed golfing, the lake, boating, playing cards, traveling all over the world with Margie and dancing, but he especially loved spending time with family.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Margie Mae, son Michael, daughter-in-law Sheri, two brothers Lloyd and Gerald and his only sister Eleanor.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Patricia (Russell) Valentine, Naples FL.,  Mark (Sue) Hallett, Spencer, Craig (Nancy) Hallett, Shakopee, MN, Dick Hallett Jr., Spencer, Kris (Jerry) Illg, Spencer, Lisa (Brad) Baxter, Scottsdale, AZ., 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren with #21 on the way.

“I was 17 years old when I first met Dick and Marge when their granddaughter invited me to Christmas at their home. I will never forget how welcoming and accepting their entire family was to me. I would look forward to talking to him every Christmas for the next 21 years about what he had planned next for the town he loved. Gonna miss you, but will never forget you. ”

“It was such a pleasure visiting with Uncle Dick last summer and remembering past times spent together as a family. I have always admired Dick for his fortitude in starting several businesses, along with Marge. I vividly remember the cafe Dick and Marge opened on main street in Remsen, Iowa. On Sundays extended family would spend time at the cafe and this was often the highlight of my week. Last June when my brother Steve and I visited, I vividly recall Dick engaging in animated conversation with his children, wanting to pursue yet another building project in Spencer. At 94 years of age Dick still had vision and drive. I’m sure Dick will find a way in heaven to keep building. My condolences to my cousins and their extended families on the lost of their beloved father. Dana”

“To the entire Hallett Family: I have always enjoyed speaking with Dick when he stopped in the office. He was always upbeat and I found it easy to carry on a conversation. He impressed with his life experiences, from serving in WW II through his business endeavors. Thank you Kris and Jerry for letting interrupt your dinner at the Prime Rib last winter and sit down and chat for a while with Dick.
Mr. Hallett may you rest in peace and congratulations on life well lived.
