Lucile Arebelle Beck the daughter of Gabe and Bessie (Fallon) Bolyard, was born on her grandfather’s farm on October 15, 1920, near Gillet Grove, Iowa. She grew up on that farm and attended school all 12 years in Gillet Grove, graduating from High School  in 1938.      Lucile married Joseph Beck on February 25, 1939 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the Greenville area raising cattle, hogs, and chickens. Lucile worked hard helping on the farm and raising her family.  During her married life she owned and operated Miller’s Bay Drive-In at West Lake Okoboji for 10 years, and she did numerous other part time work through the years as well. She belonged to the Greenville Congregational Church and later the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Lucile and Joe purchased a home, on Center Lake, in the late 1970’s, and enjoyed living there, spending time with family and friends. Lucile and Joe moved back to Spencer in 1994. In her retirement she and Joe liked to travel throughout the United States, making several trips to Europe, and enjoyed spending several winters in Arizona and Texas.       Lucile was a resident of Longhouse Nursing Home for the last several years and passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 99. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2001; two sons: Jon and Jay; her great grandson, Tony; two brothers: Glenn and Floyd Bolyard; her sister, Ruth Batschelet and her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Beck.

“Lucy Beck was a best friend to my parents, a spunky 99 year old, and someone who always made me happy. I talked to her on the phone about 3 weeks ago. She sounded great, and was planning on watching The Bachelor that night! We talked about her upcoming 100th birthday and the party she hoped to have in October. Well....You picked a fine time to leave us Lucille! You said we "would have a drink together at your party." Well it is 5 pm, and I would like to make a toast to you..."Well done Lucy Beck." Cheers to a wonderful, fun lady. I will miss you. Mimi”

“I’ve known Lucy my whole life, growing up south of Spencer when she and Joe were good friends of my parents, and into adulthood. I always thought of her a force of nature, and someone who would never hesitate to let me know what she thought! It seems like the end of an era, and my thoughts and prayers go out to Joe and Sandy, Kelly and all of the Lucy’s loved ones. ”

“Lucy was one of my Bonus Mothers. She taught me to be a better housekeeper and to always work hard and never complain. I loved being in her Sunday school class, working in the kitchen at the Gods Portiin sales and making Icecream for the Icecream Social. She will always be in my heart as long as I live.
