Claris Rodell Thu, the daughter of Clarence and Ruth (Rierson) Thu was born February 9, 1941 on a farm near Ruthven, Iowa.  She was baptized and confirmed her faith in the First Lutheran Church in Graettinger.  She received her education and graduated from Graettinger High School.

On March 19, 1960, she was united in marriage to Milo Dean Peters at First Lutheran church in Graettinger.  Following their marriage, they farmed near Hartley, Iowa.  They were blessed with five children: Kimberly, Mark, Debra, Lorelei and Daniel.

Claris spent her time caring for her family and home, including Canning, processing chickens, sewing and making quilts.  Each member of the family got their own quilt.  She always enjoyed making cookies, bars, and bread.  She loved to play cards whenever she could.  She enjoyed family gatherings for birthdays and holidays.  She also enjoyed spending time at the cabin at Spirit Lake.

Claris was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley for a number of years, where she was active in LWML and The Quilters and made many quilts for missions.  She is currently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sanborn.  Worshiping the Lord was very important to her and to have her family with her.

After a stay in the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, the Lord called Claris home at the age of 79 years, 4 months, and 25 days.  Grateful to having shared her life is her husband of 60 years, Milo.  Her children: Kimberly (Brad) Cale of Sioux City, IA, Mark (Alene) Peters of Hartley, Debra (Doug) Van Voorst of Hartley, Lorelei (Brad) Beving of Hartley, and Daniel (Lori) Peters of Clive, IA.  Thirteen grandchildren: Carrie (Jim) Torgerson, Christy (Tim) Johnson, Nathan, Courtney and Mikaela Cale, Wesley, Luke and Clint Peters, Brent (special friend, Ashley) and Craig (Ashley) Zieman, Clarissa (Zach) Kollbaum, Michelle (Matt) Christen and Alan Beving.  Seven great-granchildren: Meika K. and Creed Torgerson, Karter Zimmer and June Zieman, Calvin Kollbaum, Grayson and Collin Johnson.  Two Sisters: Shirley (Marvin) Enns and Twilla Thoresen, sisters-in-law, Elaine Thu and Marlys Peters.  Also, many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ruth Thu; father and mother-in-law, Edward and Helen Peters; two brothers, Allen and Ronald; son-in-law, Rick Zieman; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, Jim Thoresen, Lester (Ruth) Peters and Glen Peters.

“Ron and I are so saddened by the loss of Clarice!! We are great friends of Dan and Lori and spent many joyous times with Dan’s parents!! One true thing I came away with in spending time with them, was how much family meant to them! She was a generous soul who shared herself with many! We’re so sorry that we can’t attend her service. Her legacy lives on in all who were fortunate to know her! She will always be in our hearts! Much love to you all!”

“Dear Alene, Mark and family, You have our sympathy as you mourn the death of your matriarch. I didn’t have the pleasure to meet her but I am sure she was a delightful lady and wonderful mother, grandma and friend. 79 seems too young. May happy memories give you comfort.
