“My deepest sympathies to the Mahrt family. Hopefully you can be at peace knowing that Duke had such a positive impact on so many people over the years. As a one year Spencer Cardinal it didn’t take long to understand how great a guy Duke was. So many great memories of summer town team baseball with Duke and the Cardinals. He will never be forgotten. God Bless!

“To the entire Mahrt family we just want to say how bad we feel and how devastating this has to be for your entire family. Jeff was one of those guys that dang near everyone called a friend. He always had that certain grin that just made everyone feel comfortable around him. Getting to know your family while being part of the Trinity Lutheran family was a blessing. Jeff will be sorely missed by many. The only thing we can say that echoes what others have said is that we hold all of you in our prayers. Jeff was just a top notched guy. Our hearts are heavy, as well as those of Amy, Ryan, and Allison. God bless your family.”

“My twin brother and I were friends with Jeff since our Jr. High days at Hayworth. We had so many fun times in school and at Jeff's house on S. Lakeport and at our house. When our Mom died in 2007, we were greeting guests at the funeral home when there was a tap on my shoulder and I looked up to see Jeff's smiling face. Words cannot express the gratitude my family felt that Jeff took the time to drive down from Spencer to Sioux City to attend her funeral. It was so wonderful to see him and his contagious smile! We spent time again at our 40th HS reunion and as usual, Jeff had us all in stitches. I have loved getting to "meet" Jeff's beautiful family through facebook and the joy was evident on his face in the photos of his beautiful grandchildren. R.I.P, my dear friend. You have earned your spot in Heaven and I hope you are enjoying a joyous reunion with your Mom. ”

“My deepest condolence to the Mahrt Family.

It's hard to describe the impact and memories for so many people that Jeff provided. So many friendships and wonderful memories were made just through Cardinal baseball alone. A lot of players, a lot of games, so many stories, but there was always one constant, Duke. I always looked forward to seeing him when I was back and it's like we had just talked yesterday. So many people will miss him dearly, but nobody more than his family.

I want to thank the Mahrt Family for sharing Jeff with so many of us over so many years.

We will miss his stories, his teasing, & his “laugh”. “Judy, Angie, Andy, Ally, Ashley and all family members,
Our thoughts, prayers, and heartfelt sympathy go out to all of you during this very difficult time. We will never forget Jeff and Judy sitting at 1/2 court in the Spencer Field House supporting Angie, Ally, and Ashley during every game of their high school basketball career. They were, and still are so very proud of you. But not only supporting those three every game, supporting and caring for every player that wore a purple and gold Tiger uniform whether in victory or defeat. Whenever anyone needed help or guidance, be it the Spencer Little League, the Spencer Cardinals, the Spencer Tail Twisters, or Spencer High School athletics, Jeff was always there. His "you can count on me" demeanor was hardly matched. We can't begin to describe how much you will be missed, but rest in peace knowing that so many know and appreciate all you have done for the Spencer Community, especially the youth in the community throughout the years. Again Jeff, THANKS FOR EVERYTHING. We are going to miss you.

“Judy, Angie, Andy, Ally, and Ashley- there are no words that can capture the pride and love your dad had for you and your spouses and children! He was always eager to share a story or picture of your latest accomplishments! Jeff was one of the kindest, most genuine, least confrontational, and most pleasant people to be around! His smile was infectious and his happiness and good nature radiated! I cannot fathom the sadness you are all feeling. Heaven gained one of the best of the best! May your memories provide you comfort and may you find peace in knowing he will be looking after you all. He is with you always! I will continue to lift you all up in my prayers! ”

“To Judy & all of Jeff’s wonderful family. Please accept Bucky’s and my deepest sympathies at the loss of Jeff. He was a great guy and friend. I have many great memories of “Duke”.... I first met Jeff in Allee Gymnasium on the campus of Morningside College in the fall of ‘77.. my freshman yr at Morningside and he was completing his degree. We became instant friends. In the late ‘70’s we commuted from Spencer/Linn Grove to Sx City where we were teammates on the Saints for many years. I caught all the games he pitched....he was a hard throwing lefty. Later we both ended up playing for the Spencer Cardinals as he was the player coach. Jeff ( & Judy I’m sure) lined up a “ blind date” for me on May 28, 1983. Bucky and I were married exactly 1 yr later and Jeff let us use their boat on our honeymoon in Okoboji. He was the manager/coach of the Cardinals when our 2 sons played for him. I will sincerely miss his greeting of “Jaybird” whenever we visited. RIP Jeff Mahrt. You touched countless lives during your 64 yrs on earth. Rest peacefully in Heaven my friend!!”

“My greatest memories of Jeff are hearing his boisterous commentary during basketball and softball events. He absolutely loved watching his girls play ball!! I'd catch myself watching him, chuckling to myself and secretly cheering him on as he heckled the officials. As I knew Jeff these past 7 or so years, he was always so kind, had a big smile for me and was truly genuine and concerned about my life and Alexa's and Jadyn's. I pray your memories of him will help bring peace and comfort in the days ahead. Hugs to all. ”

He told her he wouldn't let his daughters buy that vehicle and he thought she would do better in the one she got. He was a kind, loving, big bear of a guy and we are so going to miss him. “I remember as a kid playing catch with my cousin, about 12 yrs older than me, who was a COLLEGE PITCHER who was SO COOL because he treated me like more than a young kid – he made me feel better than I was and hopeful to be better. I cherished and idolized the experience. It was just tossing the ball back and forth in a yard, but as a now older person, it is still etched in my brain for all I hold nostalgic and happy, and I always think about how enthused and encouraged I was playing catch with Jeff when I play catch with my kids. This reflection will be with me as long as I can toss a ball, and it’s a miniscule contribution to the happy memories Jeff leaves behind to so many people. What an amazing achievement for Jeff to have spread so many happy memories to so many people. ”

“Playing for the Spencer Cardinals and being able to interact with Jeff on nearly a daily basis for a few summers was one of the more enjoyable baseball experiences I was able to have! As a distant friend, I know that Jeff would have done anything for anyone! It was a true joy to be able to get to know him. The town of Spencer will remember this man for years to come!”

“Jeff was always a pleasure to talk to. I’ve known him a long time. I first met him back when he was our Phillip Morris rep way back in the 90’s. He always was good to talk to and always a great friend to many in Spencer. I will really miss seeing him around. He is going to be missed by a lot of people. You all have my deepest condolences. ”
