Alvena Susan Koehnk, the daughter of Johannes and Fannie (Engelkes) Winterboer was born December 27, 1922 in Everly, IA. Her childhood years were spent in the Grundy County and Everly areas.  She graduated from Everly High School in 1940 and received a BA in Art Education from Buena Vista College.

Alvena married Raymond Koehnk on August 14, 1943. She was a lifelong  educator beginning her career in a one-room schoolhouse. She especially enjoyed her role in Everly leading the school’s Art Education efforts for many years.  She had many creative interests including weaving, painting, modeling and writing.  She was proud to have served as the director of Everly Community Education, and as a member of the Iowa Arts Council, Spencer Area Arts Council, and Arts on Grand.

Alvena passed away on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at Community Memorial Health Care in Hartley, IA at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Susan; infant daughter, Ann; and one sister, Bernice Melohn.

Left to cherish her memory are her son Scott (Diane) Koehnk, 3 grandchildren, Travis Decker, Anna Koehnk and Mary Koehnk; and many special nieces, nephews and friends.

Memorial services will take place at a later date.

“For several summers Scott was booted from his beloved barn so Alvena could accommodate a menagerie of artists. She welcomed weavers, jugglers, story tellers, sculptors, painters, mimes, choreographers, jesters and an assortment of musicians. She brought joy and culture to Everly while introducing these artists to the community she loved via the Traveling Artist Program. Alvena gave many of us an opportunity to grow educationally, culturally and personally.
I extend sympathy to Scott, Diane and her adored and fortunate grandchildren”

“Heaven got a super sweet lady. Scott your mom made memories for many people to love and cherish. The good old Everly school days were the best even though i was no artist. “To Alvena's family and everyone who knew her,
I give you all my deepest sympathy because I have a feeling you all are sad. It's a difficult time when someone so dear is gone. It's painful and yet there's a feeling of happiness because we got to know her. For me she was my first grade teacher in a country school north of Everly. Her beauty and warmth was like having a Miss America for a teacher.
She will leave a void in her community of friends and family, Everly, and beyond.

“Alvena was such a special lady. When she lived in Ass't. Living, I would go out and play UNO with some of them on a weekly basis. Oh how I loved having
her at my table. She had such a quick sense of humor and a beautiful smile. I haven't had a good visit with her since this Covid 19 as invaded our lives....but I thought of her often. She will be missed at the Home, I am sure.
My sympathies to her family. ”

““Here’s to us. Good friends are few!” The wine toast Phyllis Heikens, Alvena, and I shared when we lunched together. And, Alvena and I continued it over our weekly get-together in her apartment at Community Health. I was truly blessed to have gotten to share time with such a lovely, caring individual. Every time I look at the loom and spinning wheel, I think of you, Dear One. Scott, Diane, and all the family have my sincerest condolences.”
