Bonnie Jean Sorensen-Kunath was born in Hampton, Iowa February 24th 1925 to Jacob and Christine Rust Sorensen. She spent her childhood years in Latimer, Iowa where she enjoyed the rural community and the Danish traditions of the area. At the age of 14 she and her family moved to Spencer upon her father’s retirement and built the home at 1604 Grand Avenue. Bonnie graduated from Spencer High School in 1943. From there she went on to Iowa state and McMurray college.

On June 29th, 1947 Bonnie married Kay Kunath in Spencer and following the marriage they farmed and lived near Dickens for 11 years prior to Kay starting his business with Snap-On tools in 1956. In 1958 Bonnie and Kay built their current home in Spencer on 1st Avenue and she resided there for 62 years as a homemaker. Bonnie and Kay spent many winters after his retirement in Mesa Arizona before finally staying in Spencer.

Some of Bonnie’s favorite hobbies were gardening, sewing, and she also enjoyed her time with American Legion Auxiliary, Beta Sigma Phi sorority and several birthday clubs. Bonnie also gave much time to helping the elderly, visiting them, making them food and rides to the doctor.  Bonnie was also a member of St Stephens Church in Spencer and then St Albans in Spirit Lake. She was a regular participant in Sunday worship, bible study, and coffee hour. Bonnie’s Christian faith was very important to her and she endeavored to live in the way of faith all her life.

Bonnie passed away at the Spencer Hospital on Saturday December 26th surrounded by her family at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Kay, an older sister, a younger brother, her son’s Gary Patrick Kunath in 1997 and Michael Sumner Kunath in 2015. She is survived by her son Jim of Waukee, IA. She enjoyed seven grandchildren; Sara, Eric, Joshua, Lauren, Michael, Alyssa, and Kelsey, and four great grandchildren; Kaylee, Jaydon, McKenzie, and Austin of Spencer.
