Adeline Maxine Bensene

Adeline Maxine Freeburg Bensene was born Baby Norma Elaine 18th of September 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa. Adopted at age six weeks, she was returned to her birth mothers care after three weeks. Adopted again at age three month she was kept till abandoned at the Lutheran Home Finding Society in Fort Dodge, Iowa February of 1933. On March 2nd Baby Norma Elaine was chosen by her parents, Martin and Edna Falline Freeburg and renamed Adeline Maxine. Adeline became their fourth child joining brothers Wesley, Dale and Raymond. At age 5 Adeline attended Pleasant Hill country school. There, life long friendships were made. In 1944 Adeline moved, with her parents, to Spencer and graduated from Spencer High in 1950. Adeline worked at Feldman's Department Store, Walmers Bakery and Bjornstad Drug before going to California where she worked for Nashes of Pasadena. On March 15th, 1952 Adeline married Norman Carroll Bensene of Fostoria, Iowa. This union took place in the Wedding Bell Chapel San Diego, California. They became a Navy family for the next twenty-two years. During this time they were joined by four daughters, Barbara Jean, Teresa Ann, Janeen Joy and Susan Kay. There was never a dull moment between Norman's naval career and the children. In June of 1971 civilian life started in Spencer. It was indeed a thrill to have three of the four daughters graduate from Spencer High. During this time Adeline worked at Carrol's Bakery, Bjornstad Drug (calling herself the oldest soda jerk in the world), cashier for Stub's Restaurant, Nelson Drug and daily bookkeeper at the bowling alleys. After the children had graduated and married winters were spent in Casa Grande, Arizona. There she enjoyed working as a hostess for Fry's Grocery. It was very special to join her two brothers and sister-in-laws who also wintered in the area. During the summers Adeline enjoyed working at Winslow's of Okoboji, Public Relations at the front gate of Arnold's Park Amusement Park, and for Kountry Glass in Arnolds Park. In 1986, urged by her brothers, Adeline found her birth mother living in Fort Dodge. They formed a Christian love from their first meeting on April 13,1987. Adeline could never thank her birth mother enough for giving her life. Adeline was a life long member of the Lutheran Faith, and especially enjoyed returning to First English and being a member of Esther Guild. She was an avid bowler, holding many offices in several states. Her love of fishing was apparent to many in the lakes region as they could follow her red scooter and always know where the fish were biting. Adeline felt her greatest accomplishments (with the help of God) were being a Navy wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Adeline was proceeded in death by her parents, brothers Wesley, Dale and Raymond, in-laws Glenn and Daisy Bensene, son-in -law Danny Kelley, birth-mother Pauline Worrel and her husband Floyd, sisters in law Evelyn Freeburg & Virginia Freeburg and so many Freeburg / Falline aunts, uncles and cousins all who accepted her as their blood relative. Left to celebrate her life is her husband Norman of 60 years; Daughters Barbara of Spencer, Teresa and Allen of Bakersfield, California, Janeen and husband Dr. Greg Lillie of Pensacola, Florida, and Susan and husband Darwin Hoeppner of rural Spencer. Grandchildren Brandon Fischer and wife Sarah of Newport Beach, California, Chelsea Waiton and husband Tyler of Camarillo, California, Karli Martin and husband Mark of Spencer, Beau Lillie of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Levi Lillie of Napa, California and Silas Hoeppner and wife Stephanie of Ankeny, Iowa. Adeline also had two Great-Grandchildren Westin Smith of Spencer and Isla May of Ankeny, Iowa. Also left to cherish her memory are John Fischer and Mary of Paso Robles, California as well as many other family members and friends.
