Alan Ray Mengelsen

February 11, 1941 — November 14, 2014

Alan Ray Mengelsen, the son of Oscar and Lavonia Anderson Mengelsen, was born February 11, 1941 in Spencer, Iowa. Alan received his early education in country schools and later Spencer. Following his schooling, Alan entered the United States Army and served for 2 years. In 1972, Alan married Marlene Monroe. He worked for Sieh Farm Drainage, Spencer Foods, Hyman Freight and Polaris Industries where he retired from in 2003. Alan, Marlene and Rick lived in Spencer for 27 years. They all took up bowling and enjoyed the activity together for years. Alan received many bowling trophies for which he was very proud of. He also enjoyed his motorcycle, going to the races in Knoxville with his friends, planting a garden every year and keeping a weather journal for years. In 1999, Alan and Marlene moved to an acreage at Lost Island. He enjoyed boating on the lake together, riding his ATV and plowing snow with it, fishing, and hunting geese and ducks. Alan passed away on November 14, 2014 at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 73. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Smith. He is survived by his wife, Marlene of Lost Island; his son, Rick of Spencer; three sisters: Barb (Bill) Scott, Gretchen (Dave) Steffen and Janice Larson all of Spencer, IA; brother-in-law, Pat Smith of Fostoria, IA; and many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, November 21, 2014 at Warner Chapel in Spencer.
