Albert J. Swart

Albert J. Swart, the son of Albert Thompson and Mary Harder Swart, was born August 21, 1915 in Searsboro, Iowa. His early childhood years were spent in Grinnell, Iowa and then in the late 1920's his family moved to northwest Iowa. Al graduated from Gillett Grove High school in 1933. Following his schooling, he worked in Spencer and started farming in the late 1930's. On June 16, 1938, Al married Catherine Irene Reardon at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven, Iowa. To this union, two children were born, Mary Ann and William. Following their marriage, they farmed north of Spencer. Al married Helen Gerdeman on April 28, 1984 and Ruby Luscombe on November 24, 1995. Al served on Buena Vista REC, Dickens Elevator Board, Gillett Grove School Board, Cornbelt Power Corp., Sacred Heart Financial Board, Seniors Citizens Board, N.W. Aging Board, and the Clay Mutual Insurance Board. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and he also worked at the Clay County Fair selling tickets for many years. Al passed away on July 20, 2008 at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Catherine, Helen and Ruby and his son, William on July 11, 2008. Al is survived by his daughter, Mary Ann Wassom of Spencer; his daughter-in-law, Bonny Swart of Dickens; 6 grandchildren: Jack (Sherry) Wassom of Spencer, Joel (Janet) Wassom of Spencer, Chris (Tammy) Swart of Kalona, IA, Steve Swart of Spencer, Brent Swart of Spencer and Kim (Kirk) Noethe of Spencer; 11 great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
