Alice Bertha Hoberg, the daughter of Edward and Sybil (Brooks) McDonald, was born May 18, 1921 in Winner, SD. When she was an infant, her family moved to Agenda, KS. After she had initially started school, her family moved to Omaha, NE, where her youth was spent, graduating from grade school and high school. She later attended the University of Omaha and business school. During WWII, she worked for Farmer's National Co.
While working there, she met and married Arnold Carstensen on June 6, 1948 in Omaha, NE and they made their home in Sheldon, IA, later moving to Spencer, IA. They were blessed with a son, Stanley Lyle born Feb. 21, 1950 and one daughter, Ann Marie born Feb. 5, 1958. Arnold passed away on December 25, 1959.
On December 1, 1963, she married Roger Hoberg in Spencer and Ann and Alice moved to their home south of Spencer in the Harmony neighborhood. In 1964, Roger adopted her daughter, Ann Marie and she became Carol Ann Hoberg and Alice adopted Roger's daughter, Anne Marie and they were a family.
As an active member of the First Congregational Church, she served many committees and taught Sunday school. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Clay County Home Economics Extension Committees for seven years. In 1973, she had the honor of being selected the Clay County Rural Homemaker of the year.
Alice passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Arnold; an infant son, Stanley Lyle and one sister, Clara Stewart.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Roger Hoberg; daughters, Carol Healy and her husband, James of Omaha, NE and Anne Bauder and her husband, Scot of Longmont, CO; 5 grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at First Congregational Church in Spencer.
