Alice Fern Olson Schar was born on July 24, 1921, to Mamie (Westerberg) and Reuben Olson on the family farm east of Forest City, Iowa, in Hancock County. She attended country school and graduated from Forest City High School. She attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls and received her two-year teaching certificate, after which she taught in Lakota, Humbolt, and Clear Lake, Iowa. On July 2, 1946, she married Herbert Arthur Schar in the First Baptist Church in Forest City. Following their marriage they made their home in Spencer. Alice and Art raised two sons, H and Fred. When the children were small, Alice and Art ran the Dairy Treat on 2nd Avenue, famous for its multi-flavors of soft ice cream. Alice returned to teaching in 1962 and taught in the Greenville-Rossie School and after consolidation with Royal in the Clay Central School system until her retirement in 1981.
Alice was a member of Federated Women's Club, Business & Professional Women's Club, Spencer Community theater, Spencer Area Concert Association, Arts on Grand, Parker Historical Society, VFW Auxiliary, and Grace United Methodist Church. In the 1950's she played washtub bass as a member of the famous kitchen band!
Alice enjoyed traveling around the United States. She also visited Italy, Canada, the Scandinavian countries; Paris, France; and Burkina Faso, West Africa. She enjoyed the theater, music programs, and watching her grandchildren play and grow to adulthood.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Art Schar in 1992, her son Fred Lynn, and her sister and brother-in-law Don and Alpha Olson. She is survived by her sister Marlene and her husband Earl Brown of Clarion, Iowa; her son H & his wife Joanne Dyhrkopp Schar of Spencer; and her grandchildren, Sarah Schar of Chicago, IL & William Schar of Minneapolis, MN; her nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorials be given to the Red Cross, Parker Museum, Arts on Grand, Spencer Area Concert Association or Spencer Community Theater.
