Allen Albert Coughenour, the son of Freeman and Marie (Gloetzel) Coughenour, was born April 22, 1920 in Spencer, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Spencer, where he received his education graduating from Spencer High School in 1938. Following his schooling, he entered the military and served with the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1941 until his honorable discharge in 1945.
Al married Virginia Adolph on June 11, 1943 in Spencer, Iowa. Following their marriage, they traveled while serving in the military. He was called back into service with the Navy in 1950 and served during the Korean War until his discharge in 1951. They later returned to Spencer, where he worked with the U.S. Post Office for several years, until his retirement in 1978. Al was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. He also served as 1st Ambassador for the Spencer Chamber of Commerce. Al also enjoyed sports, especially golfing, which he enjoyed for 75 years as an active member of the Spencer Golf and Country Club. He also enjoyed baseball and football and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.
Al passed away suddenly at the North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, MN on Monday, May 13, 2013 at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia in 2012; a son, Ronald Coughenour and two brothers: Marcus & Irvin.
Left to cherish his memory are his daughter-in-law, Barbara and her husband, Bryce Loomis of Bruce, SD; two grandchildren: Amy Coughenour of Chicago, IL and Jill Lane and her husband, Dwayne of Maple Grove, MN; two great grandsons: Cohen and Beckett; one sister, Loretta Orth of Anaheim Hills, CA other relatives and many friends.
SERVICES
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.
