Allen Earl Ravn was born May 15, 1942 in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Gordon R. and Helen Ravn, the second of five children. Al was raised in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area and graduated from Cedar Falls High School in 1960, where he played football and was an avid wrestler.
Following his graduation, Al joined the US Navy and served four years, two in the Vietnam Conflict. Following his discharge, he went to work for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
He married Vesta Grove on October 2, 1971. Blessings of their marriage, the greatest joys of Al's life were his children, Nicholas and Emily, born in 1972 and 1975. A third child, Carrie, was born in 1974, called back to Heaven as she arrived and welcomed her father home on Friday, March 13, 2009.
The Ravn family relocated to Spencer, Iowa when Al was promoted to Postal Supervisor of the Spencer Post Office in 1981. He later became Postmaster of the Emmetsburg Post Office in 1990, where he served until his retirement in 2000. After his retirement, Al enjoyed his love of golfing on a daily basis in the summers and was an avid Spencer Tiger sports fan throughout the school years. His pride in his own children, too great for one heart to hold, overflowed to many Tiger youth he supported and cheered. Al and Vesta are longtime members of Grace United Methodist Church.
Al was preceded in death by his daughter, Carrie; his parents, Helen and Gordon; his father-in-law, Clarence Grove; and brother-in-law, Wendell Scheel. He is survived by his wife, Vesta, of Spencer; children, Nick, Eden Prairie, MN and Emily, Odenton, MD; brothers, Mike (Judy) Ravn and Steven (Danette) Ravn, all of Cedar Falls; sisters, Judy Scheel of Lakeside, CA and Susan (Dennis) Payne of Waterloo, IA; mother-in-law, Veva Grove, Fairbank; and sister-in-law, Frances Grove (Dale) Erickson of Chicago, IL; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and treasured friends.
