Alvin Frederick Christian Meyer, the son of Charlie Alvin Lawrence and Heneritta Sophia (Ottzen) Meyer, was born June 21, 1916 in O'Brien County, Iowa. He was baptized on August 6, 1916 and confirmed on July 7, 1929 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Meridan. His childhood years were spent in Cherokee County, where he received his early education in country schools, later graduating from Cleghorn High School in 1934. Following his schooling, he farmed in Cherokee County.
Alvin married Ruby Taylor on July 3, 1953 in Cherokee, Iowa. They continued to farm near Sutherland, Everly and Spencer, Iowa, until 1972, when they retired from farming and moved to Spencer, IA. Alvin owned and operated Meyer's Welding Shop in Spencer, Iowa for 17 years, until his retirement in 1988. He was an active member of First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, where he served as elder, head usher, and as president of the AAL and LLL.
Alvin passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Elmer, his sister, Gladys Bork, a stepdaughter, Jacquelyn Withan, one step-grandchild, and his wife, Ruby.
Alvin is survived by his 7 sons and their wives: Charles (Joanie) Meyer of Keystone Heights, FL, Robert (Marjorie) Meyer of Raymond, SD, Kenneth (JoAnn) Meyer of Worthington, MN, Floyd (Judy) Meyer of Collinsville, TX, Jim (Dottie) Meyer of Avon, IN, Alan (Pat) Meyer of Kirkville, IA and Dennis (Jane) Meyer of Powder Springs, GA; one step-daughter, Pamela Tripp of Urbandale, IA; 19 grandchildren; 32 great- grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Irma Woltman of Cherokee, IA and his brother, Vernon (Leola) Meyer of Paullina, IA; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M., Saturday, August 21, 2010 at the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
