Amelia Axdahl Gilbert

November 29, 1908 — February 14, 2008

Amelia Axdahl Gilbert, the daughter of Andrew and Christina Axdahl, was born November 29, 1908 in O'Brien County. She was educated in rural schools near Primghar and Paullina, graduating from the Gaza High School in 1925. She attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake to get her teaching certification, taught 2 years in the Grant Township School in O'Brien County, and 5 years in Alta Consolidated Schools. She was united in marriage to Ralph Gilbert on March 11, 1935. They farmed the E.C. Bertram farm north of Peterson for several years, and then bought a farm west of Peterson in 1943 where they lived for over 40 years. Amelia enjoyed growing roses, gardening, canning and baking. In 1985, she and Ralph moved into a new home in the town of Peterson. Throughout her life, Amelia was very active in her church groups at the Peterson United Methodist Church, serving as superintendent of the Sunday School for many years, and as president of the Women's Society. With their two children, she also became involved in 4-H and Cub Scouts in addition to lots of school activities. Amelia passed away on February 14, 2008, at the Sutherland Care Center at the age of 99. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph in 1999; her sister, Bertina Hill. Left to cherish her memory are two children: Dr. Beth Gilbert (Paul Martin) of Superior, WI and Dean Gilbert (Peggy) of Phoenix, AZ; 3 granddaughters; 2 step-granddaughters; 6 great-grandchildren; 6 nephews including Jack Hill (Betty) and Norman Hill (Nancy), both of Sutherland; and many other relatives and dear friends.
SERVICES
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, February 18, 2008 at the United Methodist Church in Peterson.
