Ann Hillmer, age 85, of Spencer, IA, died on July 2, 2016, at N. C. Little Hospice in Edina, MN.
Ann was born in Curlew, IA, the third of four children. She graduated from Curlew High School where she was a part of a basketball team that competed at the State Tournament. She attended Iowa Teacher's College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls. While still a young single woman she traveled throughout Europe, taking a detour to visit relatives in Germany. She was an elementary school teacher for eight years before choosing to stay home with her growing family.
She married Stan Hillmer of Mallard, IA in 1957. The couple lived briefly in Spencer, then lived in Estherville and Storm Lake before settling back in Spencer for good in 1961. They lived in their home at 918 E. 12th Street for almost 55 years. Ann was a dedicated member of First English Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for 25 years and sang in the church choir.
Ann volunteered for Meals on Wheels and St. Luke's Lutheran Home and served in the Esther Guild where she made countless quilts for Lutheran World Relief. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, reading, and playing the piano. Her nylon net scratchers were a longtime high-demand item. Neighbors and friends were frequent beneficiaries of fresh produce from her garden or scrumptious foods from her kitchen.
In November 2014 she moved with her husband into Riverview Terrace, where she enjoyed numerous social activities, especially playing in the bell choir. After a sudden cancer diagnosis in June of 2016, Ann spent her last weeks at N.C. Little Hospice surrounded by loving family and caring nurses and staff.
Ann's generous spirit, unwavering faith, and strength in overcoming life's obstacles remain an example to her family and all those who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one granddaughter. She is survived by her husband Stan, one brother, three children, and two granddaughters.
