Anna Van Oort Elvin, 91, died at Elkhorn Care Center on May 20, 2006. Eldest of seven children, she was born February 11, 1915 to Simon and Artie (Mol) Van Oort in their rural home near Matlock in Sioux County, Iowa. After graduating from Milford High School she worked for a local physician. Caring for victims of the violent tornado that damaged the Iowa Great Lakes area during the early 1930's was indelibly inscribed in her memory.
On February 15, 1937, she married James W. Elvin of rural Spencer who preceded her in death in 1987. As a farm wife, she participated actively in all phases of that business and continued to do so after his passing. She took great pleasure in her extensive, far-flung family, keeping in frequent contact with all of them. Her brother, John W. Van Oort, and sister, Christina Sproessig, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn Kelley (Dr. John W. Kelley, Jr.) and grandsons, John Whitney Kelley III and James Elvin Kelley (Susan) all of Omaha, Nebraska. Other survivors include Henrietta Green, Milford, Iowa, Artie Graham, Ames, Iowa, Marion Gruchow, Traer, Iowa, Chris Van Oort, Milford, Iowa and numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
