Anna Margaret Somers

Anna Margaret Somers, the daughter of Jerd Groenewold and Margaret 'Maggie' (Cramer) Groenewold, was born November 2, 1919 on a farm near Everly, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Waterford Twsp., Iowa, where she received her early education at a country school and graduated from Spencer High School in 1937. She received her teacher's certificate from Iowa Teacher's College in Cedar Falls, IA. and taught at country school until marriage. Anna married Keith Somers on February 15, 1942, at the Groenewold farmstead. They farmed there for 31 years. They were active in Farm Extension classes and Farm Bureau. Anna was a long-time 4-H leader. They moved to Spencer in 1980. Anna did income tax preparation for H & R Block in Spencer for 13 years. She was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer, where she taught Sunday school, was a funeral consultant and was active in the UMW. Anna and Keith enjoyed traveling and camping and spent their winters in McAllen, TX. Anna passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa on June 15 at the age of 95. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Keith in 1993; a brother, George Groenewold and his wife, Helen; a sister, Ettie Groenewold and another brother in infancy. Left to cherish her memory are one daughter, Patricia Amundrud and her husband, Donald of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; one son, Dr. Dennis Somers and his wife, Mary of Sioux Falls, SD; 4 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
