Archie Manford Berends, the son of Chris and Jennie (Noble) Berends, was born June 12, 1921 in Harris, IA. His childhood years were spent in the May City, Iowa area, where he received his education.
Archie married Darlene Woltersdorf in June of 1945. Following their marriage, they farmed near Ocheyedan, IA for 14 years, until moving to Everly, IA, where they continued to farm. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Everly. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau and enjoyed woodworking. Darlene passed away in 1980.
He married Alma 'Jeannie' Pooler on March 9, 1981 in Everly, Iowa. They continued to live on the farm near Everly, where he worked for Farmer's Elevator for over ten years, until his retirement. For the last 8 years, Archie has been a resident of St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
Archie passed away at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer on Sunday, January 16, 2011 at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Darlene; one son, Dennis Berends; a sister, Pearl Frerichs and a great grandson, Austin.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jean of Spencer; one son, Steven and his wife, Beth Berends of Everly, IA; a daughter-in-law and her husband, Susan and Jim Adams of Everly; 7 grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; a sister, Irma Gonnerman of Littleton, CO; a brother, Leslie Berends of Indianola, NE; four stepdaughters: Cindy Hamrick and her husband, Craig of LeMars, IA, Sandy Hobmeier of Sioux Falls, SD, Lori Beal of Spencer, IA and Bev Joyce of Waite Park, MN; other relatives and friends.
SERVICES
Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 19, 2011 at the Warner Funeral Home in Everly.
