Dr. Arlie Verl Daniel, Jr., 80, was born May 15, 1943, to Arlie Verl and Eleanor (Grover) Daniel in Spencer, Iowa.
Arlie was the oldest of five children. He attended Meadow Number Five Elementary and Graduated from Spencer High School in 1961. Following graduation, he attended Iowa Lakes Community College getting his associates degree in 1963. Arlie earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Morningside College in Arts in 1965. After Morningside, he went to Missouri Valley Public Schools from 1965 to 1968. In 1968, he served as 1st Lieutenant within the U.S. Army from 1968 – 1971. After his time serving our country, Arlie began teaching high school within the Clinton Public Schools. In 1978, he graduated with his masters from the University of Iowa, then in 1981, he earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Nebraska. After Nebraska, he served as the director of speech education at East Central University through 2010.
In 1994, Arlie coauthored the chapter “Basic Communication Course Annual”. In 1995, he received his Teaching Excellence Award from East Central University. Arlie became the Lingscheid Distinguished Professor and East Central University in 2006 and held that through 2010. Also in 2010, Arlie was inducted to the Hall of Fame within the Central States Communications Association. He was also named professor emeritus at East Central University. He served as the assistant district governor of Rotary International through 2015. In 2017, he became the governor of Rotary District 5770 within Rotary International.
Dr. Arlie, professor of communication at East Central University was selected for inclusion in the 2008 edition of the biographical directory “Who’s Who in the World.” He also coauthored “Project Text for Public Speaking”.
He is proceeded in death by his parents; his brothers Everett in 2020, Joe in 2014; sister, Mary Helen in 1999; brother at heart Fred Lindemann in 2021.
He is survived by one sister Georgia (Dennis) Dohrman of Sioux City, IA; sister’s-in-law Candice Daniel of Texas, and Pam Daniel Draper of Cherokee, IA; sister at heart Susan Lindemann; son at heart Lam Dinh; nephew at heart Nabin Shrestha; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many family and friends.
