Arlyn 'Butch' Jay Bergendahl

November 19, 1942 — April 22, 2015

Arlyn 'Butch' Jay Bergendahl, the son of Eddie and Maxine (Elliott) was born November 19, 1942, in Harris, IA. He received his education in Harris, Sibley, and graduated from Ocheyedan Community High School in 1961. He joined the Army National Guard in April 1964, was activated in May 1968, and sent to Ft. Carson, CO. He was stationed there until December 1969, when he was honorably discharged at the rank of Sargent. On April 24, 1968, he was united in marriage to Linda Ebel at the Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, SD. They lived with his parents in Spencer until May 1968. They moved to Colorado when he was activated and returned to Spencer in December 1969, where he rented a house and then bought it. Butch worked for Farmers Elevator in Allendorf, Cleghorn, and Spencer from 1961 to 1974, when he started working for Eaton Corporation until his retirement in 2004. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Spencer and served as a Trustee for a number of years. He was a member of the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 where he served as Vice President, Honor Guard, Color Guard, and Historian. His family was all four legged, consisting of (cats) Digger, Cutter, and Codylee; (pugs) Tyke, Toby, Tjay, and Ode. He enjoyed camping, traveling the countryside, fishing, campfires, riding motorcycle, and catching up on news. He enjoyed bus trips to Branson, MO, cruises to Mexico, Cayman Islands and Hawaii, and trips to Las Vegas, NV and Cancun. Butch also liked going to the Clay County Fair, watching old westerns, the History Channel and reading. Butch passed away on Wednesday, April 22, at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, at the age of 72. He was preceded in death by his parents; (cats) Digger, Cutter, Codylee; and (pug) Tyke. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda of Spencer; (pugs) Toby, Tjay and Ode; brother, Gary (Jeanne) of Bismarck, ND; niece, Dawn (Michael) McKay of Fairfield, IA; nephews: Bart (Judy) Bergendahl of Littleton, CO, and Todd Bergendahl of Bismarck, ND; great-nephew, Brett (Valerie) Bergendahl of Parker, CO; great-nieces: Lauren (Rich) Kastner of Fort Worth, TX, and Marina McKay of Fairfield, IA; great-great nephews, Lucas and Marshall; great-great-niece, Lacey; many cousins and many friends. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Butch's name.

Funeral Services will be held 1:00 P.M., Monday, April 27, at the Warner Chapel in Spencer, Iowa.

North Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery Spencer, Iowa Military services will be conducted by the American Legion Glen Pedersen Post #1 at the graveside service.
