Arnold "Arnie" William Larsen was called Home on November 2, 2015, at the age of 93 years, having lived at home on the farm until the last few days of his life. He was born on November 27, 1921 near Lytton, Iowa to William and Christine (Ditzel) Legge.
Arnie grew up in Spencer and graduated from Spencer High School. As a self-taught radio electrician, he worked at Lockheed in California wiring military planes. When the war started, he was finally able to accomplish his goal; he gained entry into the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot. He proudly served our country during WWII as a P38 Lightning pilot in the Southwest Pacific; he flew 100 missions as a fighter pilot in the 475th Fighter Group, as a wingman. He always said that he was the only "L" in his squadron to come home, that he got himself out of a lot of situations because he was a good driver. When he returned home, he married Lois Rossiter on June 14, 1949 and lived the rest of his life on the farm southwest of Spencer. He farmed and operated Larsen Radio & TV Repair in south Spencer. He loved to study mathematics, physics and history, and he had many interests and accomplishments including ham radio, stock market, astronomy, dancing, fishing and family.
He is survived by his wife Lois Larsen, his children: Charles Larsen, James Larsen, and Robert Larsen all of Spencer, Iowa, Joan Olive of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Janet DeLoughery of Pickstown, South Dakota; his grandchildren: Matt Larsen (Jill), LeAnne Praska (Nick), Lea Schuster (Brian), Crissia Bullock (Steven), Kelly Larsen and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother Christine Larsen and step-father Hjalmar Larsen; his brothers Herbert Larsen and Kenneth Larsen; and great-grandsons Salman Deloughery and Andrew Larsen.
