Arthur (Art) Dale Rhodes was born to William and Ethel (Legere) Rhodes on their homestead on October 29, 1921, in rural Spencer, IA. This is where he would live out his childhood years with his 9 brothers and sisters helping out on the farm and receiving his education from Spencer schools graduating in 1939. He then joined the United States Army in 1942 during WWII stationed at Camp White in Oregon serving as Sergeant Section Leader until he was called back home to help out on the family farm after his father suffered an accident.
Art was united in marriage to Martha Ione Harrington on November 3rd, 1947, in Jackson, MN. To this union were born 3 children, Tom, Pam and Jim. They made their home in Spencer where Art worked as a carpenter until his employment with REC of 34 years, where he worked as a lineman and later on becoming foreman until his retirement in 1983. Art was a lifetime and oldest member of the First Baptist Church in Spencer and also served as an acting member of the American Legion.
An avid outdoorsman, Art enjoyed hunting and fishing, going on many excursions with family and friends, gun collecting, watching old "Westerns" and listening to classic country music. After retirement, he enjoyed "going to work" at the senior center where he kept busy playing cards and shooting pool, considering himself to be quite the "shark". You would find him doing crossword puzzles or reading the Bible in his favorite chair in the evenings, but most of all he enjoyed the company of his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren to whom he was known as "Popi" whose face lit up when you entered the room along with an extended hand and always a story or two to tell. Never short for words, Art had a quick-witted humorous wisdom about him that left us many times in tears of laughter.
Art passed away peacefully in his home on September 3rd, 2012 at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Marjean and two brothers: Lester and Darrell.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Martha of almost 65 years; son, Tom and his wife, Deb of Grand Island, NE; daughter, Pam and her husband, Dwayne Freeman of Spencer; son, Jim and his wife, Glenda of Cape Coral, FL; brothers: Duane of TX, and Jay (Connie) of AZ; sisters: Eleanor Warren (Bill) of MN, Dorothy Rogers of VA., Norma Warnock of IA, Marjorie Sanders of TX and Carol Maze (George) of IA, 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grand children and many nieces and nephews.
