Barton Earl Smoot

March 6, 1949 — March 9, 2011

Barton Earl Smoot, the son of Glenn and Cora (Smith) Smoot, was born and baptized at home in Laurens, Iowa on March 6, 1949. Royal became his lifelong home in 1954, when his family moved to the Opera House on Main Street. Bart was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Royal, and was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Bart was part of the undefeated football team of 1965, a team that was not even scored upon, before graduating from Clay Central High School in 1967. Bart briefly attended college in Des Moines, and then started working for the Rock Island Rail Road in 1968, where he worked until retiring 30 years later. On March 6, 1976, Bart was united in marriage to Becky Thompson at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. They were blessed with one son, Zane. Bart was active in his community and served with the Clay County Emergency Medical Services and Royal Fire Department, several years as Fire Chief. His passion for life embraced a broad spectrum of hobbies including hunting, fishing, photography, archery, boating, mowing, grilling, wood working, and riding his motorcycle, to list but a few. Bart believed that Life Is Good; he lived it to the fullest and freely shared his gift of laughter and special gift for making great popcorn. His greatest joy was spending time with family, time at the lake, and his pal Kolby. Barts great love was not limited just to his immediate family. Over the years, Bart helped nurture and care for many daycare children, fondly referred to as (Beckys Kids). Bart passed away on March 9, 2011, at the age of 62. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn and Cora; two infant brothers, Herbert and Gerald; sister Millie Kudrin; father and mother-in-law Jim and Jane Thompson, and sister-in-law Barb Morrison. Those who will forever celebrate the time shared with Bart are his wife, Becky Smoot; his son, Zane and his wife, Kristi, all of Royal; sisters, Flo Smoot and her husband Ted Lombard of Anchorage, Alaska, Linda Swenson and her husband Ron of Spencer, Iowa, and Peg Luchtel and her husband Lenis of Lake View, Iowa; special four legged friends, Kolby, Max and Smokie; and all current and previous daycare children and their families. Bart's light and laughter will be sorely missed in this world.
