Ben Toebes

Ben Toebes, the son of Henry and Lucy (Wieringa) Toebes, was born March 20, 1937 in Chicago, Illinois. His childhood years were spent in Berwyn, IL, where he received his education, graduating from Chicago Christian High School. After his schooling, he entered the National Guard and served for 8 years until his honorable discharge in 1963. Ben married Diane Hildenbrand on April 7, 1962 in Chicago, Illinois. After their marriage, he worked for a sanitation company in Downers Grove, IL for 24 years. Ben later purchased the business from the owner and operated it for 10 years. Ben and Diane sold their business in 1989 and moved to Spencer, IA, where he worked for Northwest Iowa Beverage for 6 1/2 years and later Metal Works for 9 years until his retirement in 2002. For the last 12 years he answered phones at Bill's Repair. Throughout the years, he enjoyed reading and vacationing. He passed away at Northshire Residence in Spencer, Iowa on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at the age of 80. Ben was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Diane; and two sisters, Alica Tarver and Lucy Kornkiewicz. Ben is survived by his three sons, Bill (Marie) Toebes of Spencer; Bob Toebes of Spencer and Ben (Pamela) Toebes, Jr. of Elgin, IL; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; one brother, Henry 'Hank' (Carolyn) Toebes, Jr. of Tampa, Florida; other relatives and many friends.
