Benjamin Delos Griffiths, the son of Benjamin and Myrtle (Evans) Griffiths, was born on May 3, 1921 in Lucas, Iowa. He was raised in Lucas and received his early education in nearby Chariton, Iowa. While in high school he really enjoyed playing in the marching band. After high school, Ben entered into the military on March 23, 1944, serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. While in the military he served overseas and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged on March 7, 1946.
After serving his time in the military, he moved to Spencer and started working at Brenizer's Dairy. He worked there for about 4 years and then moved to Lucas where he made the transition into cabinet making. After a short time there, he returned to Spencer and continued making cabinets and did other carpentry work. Ben enjoyed living in Spencer and raising his family. He also played the drums for many area bands throughout his life. Ben was a member of the First Christian Church, the Spencer Area Shrine Club, and the Evening Shade Lodge #312 A.F. & A.M.
