Bernice Wolthuis Bowers was the first born to William & Anna (Pohl) Bendlin on September 30, 1916. She was baptized on November 5, 1916 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Manson and confirmed at First Evangelical Church in Spencer. She attended school in Summit Township, graduating from Spencer High School.
Bernice was married to Gerhard Wolthuis on January 19, 1938. For 35 years, they farmed in the Royal area. Gerhard passed away on December 31, 1973. She married Roy Bowers on October 9, 1982. Roy died on August 9, 1997.
Throughout the years, Bernice was active in her church teaching Sunday school, a member of the Women's Missionary League and servicing on the Library Board.
Bernice helped with daily farm chores, but especially enjoyed gardening. She also made quilts for her family. This lady was never idle. In her later years, she was employed at the White Marlin and Minnie's Kitchen Store.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband's: Gerhard & Roy; daughter-in-law, Colleen Wolthuis; two sisters: Audrey & Joyce; two brothers: Virgil & his wife, Jeanne & Donald.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Gary (Nelda) Wolthuis of Spencer, Sharon (Tom) Pickrell of Greeley, CO, Dave Wolthuis of Lincoln, NE; 6 grandchildren: Lynette, Tim, Troy, Tracey, Rona & Kelli; 14 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-granddaughters; four sisters: Edna, Lorraine, Shirley & Madlyn; 2 brothers: Lowell & Marvin; other relatives and friends.
In lieu of Flowers, a memorial has been established in Bernice's name.

Funeral services will take place 10:30 A.M., Monday, January 5, at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer.
