Carl "Bertil" Carlson was born November 6, 1916 in Boxholm, Iowa to Carl F. and Hulda (Malmquist) Carlson. The Carlson family lived and farmed in the Boxholm area, and DeRidder, Louisiana. Bertil attended school in Boxholm and DeRidder and graduated from Boxholm High School. He and Marian Larson met while on a train going to a Luther league Convention, in Rockford, IL. They married a few years later in December 21, 1943 in the Lutheran Church in Albert City, Iowa.
Bertil and Marian farmed in the Albert City area until 1960, when they sold the farm equipment and Bertil went to work for Ed Sunholm at Superior Manufacturing. They moved to Spencer in 1968, and Bertil continued to work at Superior/Witco Manufacturing for 22 years. After retirement, Bertil and Marian owned and operated the Spencer Cab, and he enjoyed driving for 10 years. Bertil has been an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church for over 40 years. Bertil was a member of the Lions Cub for 25 years, and a more recent member of the Golden K's. The Carlson's moved to the Highlands in 1991, where they lived for over 18 years. Due to failing health, Bertil moved to St. Luke Lutheran Home, where he was cared for by a kind and loving staff since December 2007 until his death.
Bertil passed away at the St. Luke Lutheran Home on January 7, 2009 at the age of 92. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Julia Newbury, and a granddaughter, Misty Dawn Carlson.
