Bettie E. Lawrence

December 5, 1920 — December 22, 2014

Bettie E. Lawrence, the daughter of John and Alice (Towne) Elder, was born December 5th, 1920 in Spencer, Iowa. Her childhood years were spent in Spencer, where she received her education, graduating from Spencer High School in 1937. Bettie married Richard Lawrence on September 2nd, 1943 at the Congregational Church in Spencer. After their marriage, they moved to the family farm in Meadow Township, carrying on the tradition that now stretches over 100 years. She was a member of the Langdon United Methodist Church and the UMW Women's Society. She also belonged to the Clay County Garden Club and TTT Chapter BP. Bettie knitted more than 150 sets of mittens for the Tree of Joy through the RSVP program. She was also involved with the Clay County Fair for many years doing table settings and floral arrangements. Bettie had a passion for flower gardening. She enjoyed listening to sports, news and the farm market reports on the radio. She also was known for creating beautiful floral holiday center pieces for the dining room at Longhouse and Northshire. Bettie's greatest joy in life was living on the farm being a wife, mother and grandmother. She passed away on Monday, December 22, 2014 at the age of 94. Bettie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Richard on January 26, 1987 and son, Peter Lawrence on November 5, 2008.
